Welcome!

Another observation from me, but I really hope that AVB takes on board the lessons learned this weekend.

He has a reputation for trying to be too smart, and make players fit his system. There is nothing wrong with playing 4-4-2 or slight variation of it and doing the best out of it.

When I played we had players in the team that were more than capable of understanding "how" to play a different formation, but for whatever reason it never felt comfortable. Almost without fail we would struggle and change back to 4-4-2 during the first half and turn the performance around.

IMO we can play

Friedel/ Lloris

Walker - Gallas/Kaboul - Caulker - Vert

Lennon - Sandro/Parker - Dembele - Bale

Sig/Dempsey

Defoe/Ade

With something along those lines I think we'd win a lot more than we'd lose.

Welcome to the best thread in the world Tom.

I'm a big believer in form and if Vert stays at LB with Caulker and Gallas in the middle all playing well then Disco will have to fight for his place again.

I love Disco but his decision making can be awfull, but he has pace, good positioning, good work rate and gets forward well. Time will tell and I cannot wait for the next match, I know we will lose it unfairly due to a terrible error from an official but I'm looking forward to it anyway.

I think he's fine as cover, but if there is anyone in the team that is the weak link it's him. His pace gets him out of quite a bit of ball watching and he's not the tallest.

Even before yesterday I thought Vert may have been brought in to play there as he plays there for the national team and we had 4 good quality centre backs already in the squad.

So for me, he'd be a dead cert for LB and can link up with Bale with pace, and can also hit a hell of a strike as well so will chip with a few goals.

Vertongen was bought to play at centre back and thats where he is best at and thats where he'll play, he filled in at LB for 45mins thats all.

When fit it will be he and Kaboom at the back but Caulker has shown enough already in the meantime to drop the liability that is gallas.

BAE will be straight back in the team once he is fit.

I thought Vert was absolute class yesterday but BAE is our first choice LB all day long for me. Yeah, he makes mistakes at times as EP said - particularly with decisions but he has got progressively better and more confident every season and it'd be a shame to halt that.

In other news, this tickled me:

I really like Sandro, but I think against the teams where we should take the game to the opposition, we would be better with Tom playing. Against your Uniteds, and Chelsea etc - Sandro is the better option - but the game was crying out yesterday for someone to pick a pass. The number of runs by Lennon, Bale, and Defoe that went unnoticed was criminal.
This has been painfully obvious already this season. When we play at home (especially) and teams sit deep, pack the defence and attempt to park the bus and hope for a draw, Sandro's selection adds little value. In situation where we are camped in the oppostion's half, it's imperative that we have Hudd on the pitch.

Games that are more evenly matched and the oppo take the fight to midfield, then Sandro's inclusion should be expected.

Both Caulker and Vert are looking classier with each game - I'm expecting to actually score from some corners this season!

Agree with that. They both should be on the pitch from what I've seen so far. I may be being a bit unfair on BAE but he's not for me.

I wouldn't want to have to ban him.
I can't believe he's been registered so long without saying something..

I think the point some are making about Sandro at home are spot on. I would have liked to have seen Hudd come on earlier yesterday and just use the ball, he would have calmed things down a bit. Sandro is a top player but he only has one gear and looks like he wants to burst the ball rather than stroke it and treat it with courtesy like Hudd does.

These are all great problems to have, strength in every position even without our exciting youngsters like Townsend, Kane, Livermore etc. The future looks very promising.

Sorry EP but I just can't get excited about any of those 3. Long term I can't see them being anything more than occasional bit part players...if that.

I know.

Indeed, you can guage the level of my interest by word-counting my post that responds to your photo. Anything over 10 words and it was riveting. yes
