There was a discussion (think it was on Ian Wrights show on Absolute) about ex players being given financial support.

What are people's views here?

Personally as sad as this is footballers make enough money that they should be able to provide for their own well being in retirement.

The wife nearly fell over when I told her that he was only a year or two older than me. I hate to say it but he's not long for the world unless he radically shakes his life up and gets a grip.

Agree but it isnt all Giggs longevity is it?

Most players never break into the 1st team permanently or for 'years' though.

I bet Ian Wright (prolific scorer) didn't earned millions in his time at Arsenal back then?

And that's why he now works in radio...when your career finishes (no matter what it is) you should plan to do something else...not rely on others to support you.

Not sure about wages in Wrightys day...can't think he's not a millionaire though.

Can't think Wright actually needs to work TBH. He was playing in the days of decent enough salaries by the average Joe's standards.

Sorry to seem harsh, but I think a clean end for the guy is better than 30 years of addiction and suffering and endless photos of him 'looking at a pint' of beer etc.

Wasted his own life, he chose his own tragedy.
Harsh. Drink is just as addictive as fags, possibly more so as drink affects/grows hand in hand with depression/illness.
True but you have to get to the bottom of your addiction yourself. You can have all the help in the world, and it seems as if he has, but no one can do it for him.

Pretty sad but you have to let people do what they want no matter how painful it is to see.

Love him as a player and as a Spurs fan will always be a big fan of his... but when he was a footballer. Really, I don't have any sympathy for him. He got himself in this mess and he's been given plenty of opportunities over the years. However, if you hang around with scumbags and don't change your ways, you can't blame anyone else but yourself.

As a human being I hope he's okay but I really don't care for him any more than a stranger who is in trouble.

Feel sorry for his Kids Regan Mason and Bianca - having to see their dad go through this in public .

I think Chris Evans , Danny Baker & Co have to take some blame - dragging him on the Pis* all the time just wanting to hang out with Gazza at his prime - little did they know the damage they were causing

I saw Gazza play some wonderful Games for England and Spurs met him lots of times and parts of me think If Alex Ferguson got hold of him in his younger years rather then El Tel would his life have turned out better ?

I'm sorry but I think that's rubbish, nobody makes an alcoholic drink, and nobody can stop them. It would have happened regardless.

Hopefully he will pull through and beat it, but only he can make that happen.

Well if they didn't know, how is it their fault? Why aren't you blaming Gazza for Danny Baker's throat cancer, dragging him out boozing and smoking cigars. How do you know who dragged who out?

I think maybe Gazza needs to take a proportion of the blame, and that proportion is 100%.

I have zero sympathy for alcoholics. I was dragged up by one. It's a choice you made, fking deal with it. There's plenty of people who have been through the st who didn't turn to alcohol for comfort. Pathetic.

Heard there's a 'Gazza Fund' that's been set up and players and celebs alike are putting money into it. The mind boggles. There's plent of worth while causes rather then funding an ex multi millionaire footballer get back onto his feet. No matter how good he was he's fked his own life up. My sympathy goes to his kids who have the waste of space for a dad.

Nice to see his freinds and fellow footballers coughing up for his treatment but i was under the impression that Gazza was still worth a tidy sum from his playing days, maybe not now?
His old mate Jimmy 'Five Bellies'doesnt seem to get any mention now when Gazza's troubles are in the news, are they still mates?

Joey Barton has been ranting on twitter about it. Basically saying all the celebs are just on a PR exercise.
