Or Iain Dowie. He's desperate to get back into management.

Dean Saunders was sacked yesterday. Coincidence? I think not!

Complete neutral on this but I hope Moyes gets it. He's been brilliant at Everton, showed great loyalty and worked wonders with their budget.

I think today is a day for raising a toast to one of the biggest achievers that was ever in any walk of life.

I don't know who the new manager will be - but it will be a hard job for them - because they are directly replacing an outstanding manager - a guy who is just about unbeatable imo. I realise he had to go sometime - and for Man Utd - its a sad day - but its a good day too because a new era can begin under the new guy.

Trouble for Man Utd though is how do you replace him - the Special One is been mentioned - but im not sure he has the ability to stick with them in the long term. Other clubs fire their managers very often.

But Man Utd were able to keep the same man for 27 years - some clubs can hardly keep them for 27 days lol - and I think that this has stood to them in the long term.

Do United simply have to accept that replacing Sir Alex with someone as good or better is going to be impossible - and just work to get the best man they can get to be their new manager.

Certainly it would be a poor move if they were to sack the new man after a year simply because hes not as good as Alex. The reality is that very few managers are as good as Alex and any that are - their current clubs will be trying to keep them.

I would like to say well done to Sir Alex Ferguson for some astonishingly brilliant achievements and wish him all the best in his retirement

Mourinho would handle the job better, but Moyes is probably right for the job.

No option for Laudrup? Sets him teams to play in a similar style, can attract big name players and be respected by the current bunch. Other than that, would love Mourinho to go there....

In fairness Moyes has always been extremely consistent at Everton and I think he has serious potential for the Man Utd - and I think he would be a good choice for Utd - although as I said earlier I think Man Utd will have to accept that it will be very hard if not impossible for a new manager to achieve the same performances as the great Alex Ferguson.

Would like Moyes to get his chance at Utd - but the issue for him - and any other manager that takes on the job - is that he will only have one chance at it.

I would hate to see Moyes go from EFC but I really think he would be the best long term appointment. If United are looking to emulate the achievements of SAF they need to look a little further ahead and put someone in place who will build on his legacy (IMHO) and in that regard I can't see past Moyes. I think he will struggle in Europe initially (SAF struggled domestically for the first few years), but so would SAF or any other candidate in the light of German/Spanish dominance. I reckon Moyes is regarded as the best man to take on what SAF has done for the long term, I just can't see United doing anything else I'm afraid, very afraid!

As a casual observer I hope it's Mourinho, but it's probably for similar reasons as my attitude to snooker & O'Sullivan rather than for the good of football/MUFC.

Hmmm, with Moyes delaying contract talks until the summer, it does seem rather well set up for him to take over at United.

I reckon a few quid on Moyes at United and Mourinho at Chelsea might be worth it. Klopp is the other one that would be a good bet. What he's done at Dortmund is impressive and there's no doubt he'll be metnioned when the board are discussing it.

If I was choosing a manager I'd want someone who understand what has made Manchester United dominant during the Ferguson years. There are two men which stand out to me. Solskjær with Giggs as his assistant. It worked for Barcelona when Pep took over. He had very limited management experience and would definitely be there for the long term.

Moyes seems to be a v.good contender...

Any new manager will still have to cowtow to Fergies wisdom even if he is on the board of the club..

I hope Man United never win another title
