Why the dislike of Beckham? Strange comments from him about a world class player?

Waddle was a pretty fantastic player himself though so I don't see why he would be jealous. Maybe he just doesn't think Beckham is as good as everyone seems to make out.

I kind of agree with that sentiment to a certain extent, he has a huge amount of hype as a player, where as Scholes was the better player but has barely recieved the same coverage at all.

I guess that is what having a huge media profile does for you.

Maybe Beckham wasn't as good as his reputation would have you believe. But to suggest that he wouldn't make the list of the best 1,000 Premiership players? Ludicrous. He would be well inside the top 50 (at least) for me.
I wonder where Waddle would rate himself? Sure, he was capable of moments of genius. But he could also be lazy & selfish.
The one thing you can say about Beckham is that playing for England seemed to mean something to him - unlike many of his contemporaries who didn't seem to give a fcensoredk

Beckham was a better player than Waddle was, any day of the week. So, if you think Waddle was a pretty fantastic player then you obviously rate Beckham much higher.

I actually have a different view of Beckham as a player and that is that the media hype , to some degree, detracted from just how good he was. If he was a Scholes , and shunned the limelight, I don't think you'd get the polar opinions of him and , instead, I think he would be unanimously rated as a great player. Not the greatest, and maybe not even in the Top 20 players in the EPL, but a great player nonetheless.

You could also ask why some people seem to think that Beckham is the greatest English player of his generation.....the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

He was a very good player but not a great or best of his generation. In that Man Utd midfield of Giggs, Scholes, Kean and Beckham he was probably third or fourth best. I actually think he was a better crosser of a ball than he was with a dead ball....there are quite a few people that can take great free kicks but not many I can think of could cross a ball like him.

I agree, I think Beckham is also a fantastic player. I don't agree that he is outside the top 1000 or even top 40 English players.

I do however agree that as you have said, and as I think Waddle is trying to, allbeit crassly, say that his hype from the media is above that of his abilities.

I realise my comments might have sounded like I was saying Beckham wasn't any good. Please don't take them that way, they were reflecting upon some peoples belief that he is the greatest footballer to ever wear an England shirt.

Waddle v Beckham, now there's an interesting debate.

Who took the worst pen, Waddle v Germany or Beckham v Portugal?

I can understand a professional footballer having a pen saved, but to miss the target....that's just mental.

In 30 yrs of my desk job (not quite on £150K a week), I've made a few errors when filling in forms, but never, I say never, have I missed the form and written on the desk. Not once.

All that money, and you can't hit a hole 24x8ft from 12 yards!!!!! yikes

Completely unrelated, but Ashley Williams indiret free kick which he skyed just outside the 6 yard box was a similar feat of skill.

Do you have the hopes of 30 million people on your shoulders and you're chance to define your career when you're filling out that form scratchchin

There is a player who is very much overlooked but IMO one of Britains finest.

Beckham was a very, very good player, helped in his MUFC days by Neville who struck up a good partnership.
He would have walked into any Premiership team.

He is marketing dream which has helped.

Waddle didn't single-handedly drag England through to the Euro championships!

Probably said an off the cuff remark which has made it through to all the papers.

Bearing in mind there have only been about 3,200 Premiership footballers in total, you'd like to think it was a spot of hyperbole.

Let's face it Beckham owed England big time after that fking sending off against Argentina...and there was that game he played towards the end of his England career when he didn't make a single tackle!
