And Liverpool pulled out of the Alonso transfer at the very last minute.

Yaya Toure was effectively ours, but due to issues with his passport/work permit he buggered off to Russia where it wasn't a problem.
That was the first time, the second was immediately before the Barcelona move.

You have me confused - how could they have pulled out when they in fact signed him? Liverpool offered a sum that Wenger thought excessive and let that one slip away. We had to be content with the major signings of Almunia (great talent) and Flamini (another Wenger balls-up allowing him to leave for Milan)

Don't quite follow the Vieira / Petit point (predictive?).
Nobody knew who they were and they were far from being the world class players they later became.

There's this expectancy to buy 'ready made' players which Wenger doesn't do. He tries to create them.

Arsenal were about to sign him from Liverpool I think the year before he went to RM for £20mil.....Liverpool pulled out right at the last minute.

Petit was a mature pro and already capped by France who'd had 9 seasons in the Monaco side and who Wenger knew would play a certain way as he'd already managed him. Someone (i.e.AC Milan) had heard of Vieira as they'd already paid 3M for him - and Arsenal narrowly beat off Ajax because of the French connection. Neither acquisition was rocket science and had to be capable from the start. Garde (who was ok as a back up player) was bought in case Wenger couldn't trust the existing midfielders (Parlour, Merson etc.)and to ease the way for the Francophones.
The fact was that at the time no one in England was buying French players as a matter of course (barring Cantona and Ginola) and certainly not those who hadn't a high profile because of language issues - Wenger of course had no such problem. To say no one had heard of Petit and Vieira shows how little English fans (and clubs) knew about European football at the time, and that has carried through;which is why Rafa was able to pick up Spanish bargains and Jose got some good Portugese / Spanish/ French deals (as well as inheriting the best Ranieri signings).

We're at cross purposes - yep you are referring to the reported 500,000 difference in demand and offer which saw that deal fall through. We had also shown interest in him and Arteta in 2004 before XA joined Liverpool as the Vieira replacement (who was clearly on his way) to allow Cesc more development time. I'd forgotten those shenanigans in 2008!

i find it amusing if not very typical that gooners write off sanogo (a players that's quite proven at his level as quite a player) who is so obviously a 'potential' player only after getting 15 mins here and 10 mins there in what is the most challenging league in europe but then still support AW after years of failure and mistakes that are made again and again on a yearly basis.... you lot do appreciate that AW thought that sanogo was ready for the EPL with absolutely no experience against players of its quality as he chose to start a season with only 1 striker? i feel for the guy, its a baptism of fire where in reality he should be on loan as a first choice in a mid table team getting used to epl quality defenders for a season.

mildly ironic on so many levels smile sums us up really in so many ways .....

Lothar Matthues is claiming (again after having said it originally about a month ago) that Arsenal have signed Josip Drmic this summer....16 goals in 28 starts....21 years old. Got Wenger written all over it.

Yep, start up the bus!

He only wants to make a couple signings. We need 3 or 4 at least! I bet there are no new players at the club in time for pre-season training.

So the resting of players prior to the final can start tomorrow - expect just a cameo from Ozil and Sanogo to start against the Baggies

That is almost a certainty. I wonder if Vela or Joel Campbell might appear at The Emirates next season.

I doubt it. They're not good enough anyway.

As a third option behind Giroud and A.N. Other I'd rather either than Sonogo if I am honest. They have a buy back clause on Vela at something like €4mil so I suspect they'll be triggering that even if it's just to sell him to someone else.
