Arteta a couple years a go would have been a good choice, but now would be too short term. The BFG would be the best captain now.

So Vermarlen is gone. Good luck to him, happy he didn't take the trip north.

I think he needed this move, regular game time and he can get back to his best. He's a classy guy, how many players would have kicked up a stink sitting on the bench last season, yet he didn't even whisper. I think he'll do well at Barca.

Agree with all that...his high risk style of defending could suit Barca very well. More importantly the club stuck to it's guns and got £15mil for a player in the last year of his contract. Given we were apparently after Smalling that means someone else is presumably on the way in.

Dont rate Smalling at all so selling Verm to Barca was doubly good business. Just hope Wengers got something good as backup.

I can see Chambers taking Verms place with Debuchy and Bellerin at RB. Still need another CB and DM to compete with City and Chelsea through a season IMO.

Anyone going to Wembley tomorrow? Managed to snag a ticket, looking forward to it seems as I missed out on the FA Cup. I know it's only a friendly but it would be nice to kick start the season with a trophy.

Not sure you can really judge Smalling on the last year or so IIRC he was played at right back a lot? I doubt he's played more than three or four games in a row with the same partner at CB for Manure.

Still he's not coming so fk him!

I think a left back is needed also.
From what I saw last season, Gibbs was good when fit, but Monreal was a weak link as cover.
Liverpool specifically targeted him at Anfield last season..

Excellent display today and 3 good goals. Very, very with the performance of the new players and again in particular Chambers who was superb at the back.

What the game has highlighted again is the need for a more physical presence in midfield and so I feel Wenger really must do all he can to address this in the next couple of weeks. With Vermaelen gone another centre half is also needed.

Overall, very happy and it's good to start the season with some silverware. smile

Really enjoyable day. Great performance in the first half and a great atmosphere. I loved Sagna and thought it'd be nigh on impossible to replace him, but it seems we've got an improvement in Debuchy. You can see why he keeps him out of the French team. How good does Chambers look? I really feel for Southampton, another season and he'd go for as much as Shaw did. Alexis looked very sharp too. Obviously struggling for fitness though.

Think Ozil is licking his lips at the thought of feeding Alexis Walcott and Chambo. Highlight was seeing Pat smiling. Great to see.

Arsenal played well but City were very poor which consequently made Arsenal look better.

Good win for you chaps today.

Re the captaincy, if everyone at Arsenal was fit would Arteta even make the first XI?
