The concern for me is yesterdays result is worrying reminiscent of previous seasons.

Is it just a bad day at the office? Do we have an issue playing under pressure with the weight of expectation on the club? Do we need to strengthen up front and at the back?

I don't know the answers these are just the concerns I've got.
Its the first game of the season?

It's a good thing for certain sporting activities, just not for a football club wink

Quite - amazing how many people expect perfection on day 1- reading my thread after Stoke was unreal, its like 60% of them expected clean sheet, perfect defensive performance, create going forward, perfect link up with Benteke all in the 1st game..

It's the most competitive league in the world, any club who can nail their pre-season and hit the ground running is going to have a distinct advantage over other clubs. I'm surprised clubs don't do more to perfect the pre-season!

I don't know if its possible though, you can never fully recreate a matchday in preseason so there is always going to be some legginess

Great idea. Teams should stop going into pre-season trying to be st.

Why's nobody tried it before?

pre season ispre season - its purely for fitness to hit the ground running on day 1 for fitness

There is no way in pre season you can replicate what will happen on day 1 of the prem, totally different

Until a few years ago - NO-ONE had any interest in it or even knew what the scores were , no tv is here we all think its mega important.

You can't necesarilly expect a team to "click" first game but you have every right to expect things like defending set pieces to be done properly....the firs goal was a shocking team goal to concede.

I dunno, I think start of the season is hard in all aspects. You have a new keeper for a start, massive change. Plus mid season they can be thinking clearly about marking, threats etc. At the moment half of them are probably thinking "fk I'm knackered this is harder than I remember, I wish he'd stop running so much"

I love correspondents like you two. The cheap 'it's the first game of the season' line is possibly one of the most irritating and ill conceived responses you can come up with.

Firstly, yes it was the first day of the season. No, I don't expect it to be perfect. I do expect that some of issues the team has suffered with over many, many seasons to be addressed. These are not new issues; blunt in attack, that's been a problem on occasion over recent seasons , first game or not. Conceding soft goals, another feature of Arsenals play in recent seasons, first game or not. Lack of a plan B when the game is going our way, that's also an issue first game or not!

I don't think anyone has an expectation it would be perfect from day one, so please provide evidence to suggest otherwise?

I'd have taken a 1-0 win with a goal going in off someone's backside to get the ball rolling. Unfortunately, our side has shown many weaknesses in recent seasons all of which appeared to resurface on Sunday.

As I said, in my original perfectly balanced both post. Was it a bad day at the office or do we have bigger problems? We'll find out in the coming months. I hope it was just a bad day at the office, however realistically you can only afford to lose 4-5 games maximum in a season and we've already had one of them.

Rant over.

Damn - I've allowed idiotic posts to irritate me again. That's a feature of previous seasons too!

Wow, you're a seriously angry individual.

You've also agreed with what we've said in part...

Is the point I was trying to make, the start of season stuff isnt I'll conceived at all. If you have played any sport competitively at any level then you'd know the difference between an actual match and any training and or friendlies is very real and does exist. You simply cannot recreate those conditions until the league starts.

I cannot remember the last time I posted on here so havent come on to wind you up, I won't be bothering again.

What match were you watching? From that comment it wasn't Arsenal & West Ham yesterday. I'm a WH fan, we played very well and did not 'park the bus'. I think most neutrals will agree that we deserved the win on the day.
Oh I watched the whole game. I didn't say you didn't deserve the win, just that it was mostly defending with a few attacks thrown in for good measure. 2 strikes on goal and 2 goals wasn't it?

I would sum up as West Ham wanted to win and Arsenal just expected to win.

Still reckon you guys could be champions tho.

I think there was a certain amount of new manager-itus involved..

ox's strike had have gone in, we would have had more confidence. That said, the defending for the first ( on tv the near side man ) was playing everyone on side - school boy error, cech didn't help.

as above we expected - they wanted.

Yes I am. It frustrates me that people can't read what is actually written and respond accordingly. You're consistent because you've done exactly the same again!

Here's why......

I said a very similar thing in my original post to which you gave your first reply. To put it another way, my comments pre-dated yours.

Re-read my originally post properly where I've clearly expressed why I have concerns about whether this was just a bad day at the office or we have returned to our bad habits of seasons gone by.

single handedly ruining the forum with his pedantry.

we will find out in coming months - I for one am still looking forward to this season as the other teams will certainly drop points too.
