Same scenario with a rugby match, it's like a carnival, singing, laughing, joking, no foul language, train can be packed, but no underlying sense of malevolence.
The atmosphere is totally different. Why ?? what happens here ??
That's right, rugby is such st that the fans admire each other for putting up with such dross.

Every single knuckle dragging moron that I know is a football mentalist though, Westham fans are normally the worst biggrin
Therefore IQ is not a barrier to enjoying football, but it is swamped by idiots who don't have two brain cells to rub together.
Just for the sheer irony.......
It's West (then a space) Ham ( with a capital 'H')

Been to two rugby games, both internationals, both had fighting in the crowd,in the first instance they were supporting the same country (Wales).
I really don't know what that tells me....unlucky?

No it tells you that supporters of any sport, once a drink has been taken become mouthy fkers. Hence the trouble.

Not just as the op says in football.

Probably on average.

In my experience plenty of smart civil people follow football.
Every ignorant fktard I have ever met follows football, thereby dragging down the average.

Define IQ, fundamentally a persons IQ is based upon a number of things but football fans amass an incredible amount of knowledge about both their own teams players and the players on other teams. They can tell you which players signed for what teams, when and for how much, when the last time x won a cup or league and so on. Whilst this is just one element of what contributes to a high IQ score, I find it fascinating.
