Greg Dyke speech
Discussion
Got time for Greg Dyke, he's not afraid to tell a few home truths. Notwithstanding he was a founder of the premier league, he's pointed out that we now have a league where the clubs are owned by foreigners, managed by foreign managers & played by foreign players.
Result: Feeble national side incapable of succeeding on the biggest stage. Is he wrong?

Nothing will change, It's all about club football which is a shame. I still watch the England matches but I'm so used to being disappointed that the result doesn't effect me like it used to.
He also said that we should be looking at victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Deluded fool.

The problem isn't a lack of ability but their attitude.
No it really is a lack of technical ability. Its not the clubs fault to be honest if there were English players good enough they'd be playing ahead of foreigners. But go and see how they train young kids in Spain or Germany or Brazil. Its all about ball skills, then go see kids training in England where they all get sworn at by their parents for giving the ball away if they try a flick and they hoof it down the park to get rid of it because they don't want to make a mistake.

I think you missed what he said. Leading up to that, he was saying that it was all well and good making changes where necessary, but the key was how to measure the success of the changes. You need targets to aim for; not necessarily to achieve but to aim for.Hence the Euro semis and WC winners in 7 and 9 years time. It's something to aspire to. Not that I think we'll do it. As it will take much much longer to change the whole structure.

You serious ?
A premiership best XI would i doubt have any english players in it .
How many of this lot that would be your starting XI for England are not playing regularly for their club's first team?A premiership best XI would i doubt have any english players in it .

Walker & Caulker amongst the 8 best defenders we have says it all really.
Any player in that list worth his salt will be getting a bus pass soon.

I know what he was getting at but the whole structure can't be changed in that time frame.

I agree. The flair is trained out of kids at the academies. Pass pass pass don't fk it up. At last, someone has come out and said we should plan for a world cup in the future. I said the same after we lost 2-3 to Croatia and failed to qualify for Euro 08. I said we should plan for 2018 world cup and use everything in between as a stepping stone.
If Dyke is serious about 2022, then there is little point in playing anyone over 24 in the national team. Because a 25 y/o now will be 34 in 2022. Rooney will be pushing 37!
I would let Hodgson pick the best team to qualify for the '14 world cup but if we get there, make Hart the captain and the oldest player. Pick a team of u/24s and let them get experience of the group stage. No doubt we'll go out but so what, we're never going to win the damn thing next year anyway. Because we're crap.
Then continue to add young players and by the time we get to '22, we might have a half decent team who have matured together. But will the English fans and press accept us going into a tournament with a trial team of youngsters with no intention of winning? I doubt it.
The other problem with the plan is the edging out of foreign players. You can restrict no EU players but it's illegal to discriminate against fellow EU nationals. A team cannot be told to restrict EU players any more than it can restrict black or gay players. It's just not allowed. You cannot say x number of English players must play. Just not legal.
But good on Dyke, Better late than never.

I would prefer that we train our youngsters to be better than those of other countries rather than give them an easier way in by limiting foreigners.
Not sure about the under 24s thing, we need a way of playing that is mirrored through academies, youth teams and national team so you can take a player out and replace him without it making a difference. Like Spain or Germany or Brazil, Barca and Madrid play totally different styles of football yet all the national team comes from these two teams and they play the 'Spanish' way.

Unfortunately, over the last 20 years we've seen a huge influx of foreign players which has restricted the chances for young players from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland to make their way in the game.
I'm in favour of quality foreign players coming to the UK, unfortunately there have been too many average and below average players come to these shores. This has been a particular problem in the top two leagues in England, I can't think of a single club who haven't bought in some very, very average foreign players.
I would love to know how many foreign players have come to the UK in the last 20 years and what ratio of those were successful.
I know at Arsenal we've had some fabulous foreign players; Bergkamp, Overmars, Vieira, Petit, Anelka, Henry, Pires, Fabregas, Van Persie, Cazorla to name some of the most prominent players. Unfortunately, we've also had any players who were absolute dross too.
