winning in 22 could be a possibility if we start picking now the players that could feature then.
So we should start a bunch of 15 year olds against Ukraine next week then?
If you read my previous quote, I said let Hogdson pick whoever he likes to get to the world cup, if we can, but once there, make Hart at 24 the oldest player in the squad. As we won't win it anyway, lets give the youngsters (not 15, your maths is out) 18-24 (who will be 27-33 in 2022) a chance. Let them do a tournament together. Barclay, Wilshire, Sterling, Sturrage, Hart, and loads of others. They won't make it out of the group stage but at least it'll save us the embarrassment of being creamed by Germany, Spain, or and one of about 10 other nations who are miles ahead of us.

What's the pint of taking Rooney to the world cup, he'll be 37 in 2022. As for Cole, Lampard, Gerrard, and the so called golden generation, they failed to win when they were 25, they ain't going to win in 2014.

I'd like to get a manager who encourages us to keep the ball.

If you watched the game last night even in the 89th minute of a game that was comfortably won someone would pick up the ball either from the back 4 or the back 4 themselves and there wasn't another player within 30 yards.

You watch a y of the decent teams and they will have players much closer together providing options. I can only think it is coaching as they are more than capable of doing it.

What's the point of taking Rooney anywhere is always injured .plus I think he does not regard playing for England as an honor as do a few other Prima Dona's .

What I saw was when the keeper/defence had the ball was all 4 defenders in a line, Gerrard and Lampard both dropping right back to pick the ball up and the 50 yards ahead are the attacking 4. Now that must be coaching, also no movement off the ball everyone is static. This doesn't happen when they play for their clubs!

Instead of aiming for 2022 why not pick a side that will still be 'young' for 2018 and give them plenty of experience playing with each other and then push on from there.

It's a scandal that the FA have only just got a national centre of excellence. Twenty or thirty years too late. It's clearly not about access as every kid in the country plays.

Someone made the point earlier that so many of the clubs are now owned by foreigners and managed by foreigners.....I mean couls Chelsea or Man City give a toss ? Compare that to Germany where the clubs are mostly owned by fans. Not difficult is it.

Dykes's got the right idea but the FA has just been so incredibly badly run for so long that it's not going to change overnight....there are so many structural issues that are a problem in this country I just don't see the England team ever getting priority.

The Premier League, most Premier League owners and most Premier League managers couldn't give a crap. How on earth they put that right I have no idea. Thhink about all the England players that have retired early too....Shearer, Scholes being the two most prominent and I think a couple of keepers have too.

One reason I think that some players retire from playing for England is the incredible slating they get from our gutter press after a bad result. We are as a nation that is football crazy with a crap system, a crap football team. We need to face up to it we are no where near good enough to compete with the top ten nations

Let's be honest, do the fans of Premier League clubs give a toss. Look at the flags at England away matches, all from Championship clubs down to non league. Hardly any from Prem clubs.

Chelsea winning the Champions League was the ultimate football experience for me. The club I followed thru the 70s and 80s when we were crap, champions of Europe!!!

I'd like to see England win the world cup but I won't lose any sleep over it. If I'm honest, I laughed like a drain thru the second half of our Germany defeat in the last world cup. I quite wanted them to hit us for 6 or 7 by the end. I think it's a shame they didn't. I think that would have led to a serious meltdown at the FA, had the beat us 7 or 8-1. The gulf between the 2 teams was greater than 3 goals for sure, even after the Lampard incident. And then things might have changed at the FA. 4-1 flattered us on the day.

I think it's got a lot to do with the relative standards of football. Which is probably why lower league fans follow England.

The best football you can watch for standard and intensity is the Champions League....the SA World Cup in 2010 the peak of the Intl game was not a great sporting spectacle.

If you look at cricket the best standard by far is watching the England team....when I was a lad I watched County cricket because I was watching Hadlee, Richards, Holding, Marshal, Botham, Gooch etc etc Now noody really cares that much about county cricket...it's all about England.

That's very true. I laugh when they say "is he ready for the step up to international class?" when for many England players, the national side represents a step down in class from the players they play alongside week in week out.

Eg, when Wayne Rooney teams up with Ricky Lambert for England, is that a step up in class from playing with RVP.

England players who come from Man U, Man City, Chelsea or Arsenal are stepping down in class when they join up with England.

Do what I do. Sad to say it, but I very rarely watch England now.

I agree with this. What incentive do you give an already spoilt child? Their fees go to charity and it's not like they would notice them anyway. The ones that would give a testicle to get in the side are not paid big bucks nor do they have the ability. The gutter press would crucify any manager if he picked a team based on spirit and it didn't pay off. The team picks itself.

Unfortunately it's picked based on name recognition rather than that oh so strange concept of "form".
