So he's come out in the media saying he CAN spend that amount of money on a player if they wanted to...what do you think will happen to the value of any player you now approach? You get the "Utd have a st load of money to spend" tax added on.
Surely he could have kept his mouth shut and just gone about his business.
We have just signed a new monster sponsorship deal. The level of debt has been massively reduced over the years and the financial reports consistently show growth in revenue and profits.Surely he could have kept his mouth shut and just gone about his business.
Did he say anything that clubs didn't already know? Of course not.
Depends on the player. If it is someone of the standard of Messi then yes, paying £74 million would be expected. Transfer fees have gone mental now. In the last month we have seen some truly mad fees being paid (but Kroos only cost £20 million- that seems a relative bargain to me).
If Utd go for Vidal and Juventus say something daft like 'well, we know you can afford it, so that'll be £74 million please' do you really see Utd saying 'true, we can afford it, here you go'? Of course not. The scouting of the player would have included other targets and Utd will know the maximum that he should cost (plus adding the merchandising benefits and whatever else factors in).
If a club over-values a player and then fails to sell him then they risk having a very unhappy player at the club.

So saying we will spend double what we've ever spent before surely isn't the greatest negotiating tactic.
To follow on from my previous comment. If Utd were linked with a £40 million player and Woodward said 'we want him and are willing to double our record fee' then that would be a stupid thing to do.I only view his comments as stating the obvious and being very ambitious. "Utd are the biggest club in the world".

It's not negotiating though is it? It's answering a journos question about transfer funds available. United have always had fortunes to spend and have always been made to pay more by frustrated less affluent rivals. How much extra did Levy milk out of United for Carrick and Berbatov? Just the way transfers work. I don't get this assumption/idea Woodward is out of his depth. You don't get into his position without a huge amount of ability. He's come across well in the interviews I've seen recently on MUTV. When he arrived at United he'd never negotiated a Football sponsorship deal before now each new one breaks records. God help everyone else if he masters the transfer market in the same way.
Anyway on a more exciting note LVG's first team sheet and game is only a few hours away!!
