The Official Manchester United Thread [Vol 4]

To answer Blib (and agree with Mickk) I think his track record does have a big part to play. But also our target was and remains 4th, which we are on target for.
Its not great football at the moment, but then Mourinho has in the past played not great football and won the league. Its all about results and stability at the moment.
Besides its not as if SAF never had issues with lower league teams in the cup

Well done to Cambridge. In certain respects, that was the ideal result.
But as someone who has followed Manchester United for over 40 years that was just about the most painful match I've ever watched on TV. It wasn't particularly disappointing because it didn't matter that much, but it was utterly painful because of it's lacklustre crapiness. And, from the point Fellaini got booked I was genuinely concerned he might end up getting sent off and we'd end up losing. He get loads of stick but he at least gives the impression he wants to get stuck in whereas most of them looked like they were trying to avoid going near the ball in case they cocked it up. And can you imagine Roy Keane doing an interview like that hopeless waffle Carrick did at the end?

I am genuinely interested in why they are giving VG time to get it right while they were immediately on Moyes's back. Is it because expectations have been lowered?
Of course they are. They are now talking about being happy finishing 4th. Their league position is false due to so many teams having a poor start. 40 points wouldn't have seen you in the top four at this stage after the 2010/11 season.
Liverpool were as much as 11 points behind in December. Now they are beginning to show signs of regaining form the gap is down to five. Arsenal and Spurs and right behind Man Utd and both improving, whilst Man Utd aren't.
Man Utd had a right run of games where they won games taking every chance they had. It was an amazing goals to shots on target ratio that they couldn't keep up. The goals have dried up and they aren't sneaking wins now.
The old chestnut of a good side wins games when playing badly was used, but the truth is this side had never shown itself to be a good side. It was a run with a lot of luck and not consistent with their regular form.
It would be a surprise to me if they stayed in the top four. Everyone is still waiting on Southampton fading, which hasn't happened yet, but Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool are all coming into the equation for the top 4.
Those teams on current form look more likely.
It is strange the change between this year and last. Moyes was judged against SAF and deemed a failure for it. LVG is being judged on Moyes and somehow getting away with being every bit as bad, but with a hugely expensive team of players that should have seen much improvement.
It's hard to argue that LVG is any better than Moyes. The results and performances aren't any better.

Moyes was very unlucky to take over in a year when City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool did so well. With Everton and Spurs performing pretty well too. LVG is lucky this year.pinchmeimdreamin said:
Apparently it was all down to the crappy pitch and a dodgy Ref
"Every aspect of the match is against us - the pitch, the referee. Everything that you can think about this is against you," Van Gaal said. No doubt we have to read between the lines to see where he isn't making excuses. This 'our football isn't the best' and 'Chelsea were successful playing not very good football' is interesting though. The football that can't beat Cambridge Utd and MK Dons is ineffective and should see Utd seventh this season. Chelsea weren't dismal at the back and toothless at the front. But will LVG be sacked or hounded out by a fan-commissioned plane; or both?

Southampton have won 5 and drawn 1 of their last 6 and are top of the form league. West Ham who were top 4 a few games ago have faded and I think it's any 2 from Saints, Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs for the champs spots (Being a Saints fan, I don't think we'll stay there, but it's giving some of you a scare )Anything can happen in the cup and as an Evertonian it usually always bites us on the arse, so last nights result was no huge surprise.
United will batter them at OT and last night becomes history.
What stuck in my throat though was the ungracious tw@t LVG's snarling red faced comments after the game FFS. Sir Alex would have been singing their praises and giving Cambridge huge credit, the guy was a legend.
Had LVG got this post straight after SAF retired he'd undoubtably not be there now.
Moyes took the gamble of the poisoned chalice and lost, anyone following Ferguson would have been under the cosh. Shame this guy got second dibs on the job, I don't think he suits Uniteds ethos one little bit. No humility, no class and no new ideas so far.
