A striker losing a yard of pace is a massive blow to their ability. That extra yard is all that is needed to make space for a shot or beat a defender to the ball. If you lose that, your confidence is bound to take a knock. You stop making the runs, try to change your game (try too hard), fail to get in the right positions etc. Seen it happen many times to players whose game was all about pace, instinct and confidence – Lineker, Owen, Torres etc. Less effected are players whose game is not centred on movement; Shearer, Sheringham, Ibrahimovic etc. They tend to play to a later age as a result of this.

So if Falcao has lose some pace due to the injury and he’s now playing in the fastest league in the world, it’s hardly a surprise that he’s not the player he was at Athletico. Is he crap? Probably fair to say he’s not as good as he was. Crap though? I expect he’d score a hat-full in a slower league such as Serie A. The question is not whether he’s crap, it’s why United signed him, given his recent injury.
I agree. "Crap" is obviously harsh, but the point is that he is not going to score many goals in the PL. Torres is quite a good comparison. A striker can go from hero to zero if he loses a bit of pace or sharpness.

I agree. EPL is probably the worst place for a striker who's lost some pace, which the previously relied upon.

This league is littered with the history of strikers that weren't blessed with great pace...the league's highest scoring player of all time Alan Shearer (we should have signed him) didn't have great pace, but scored loads of goals. Ruud Van Nistelrooy anyone? Welbeck has loads of pace but can't hit a barn door...no offence. Me? I'd take a striker that can find the back of the net over a fast guy who can't. Just My 2p's worth.

To me it's all about fitting the right striker/strikers into your system and getting it to work...

Precisely what we were saying - a striker that relies on pace can suffer really badly if he loses even a little of his speed (unlike someone like Shearer who was, for most of his career, quite slow).

What about a striker that is both slow and cannot hit a barn door, like Falcao?

Exactly, Falcao has always been in the intelligent mould of striker, being in the right place, using his football brain, ala Sheringham or Berbatov.

The fact we've been pretty st for 1/2 the season hasn't helped him one bit. If the fee being discussed wasn't so huge I'd be happy to give him more time as I do think he'll improve and be a 20 goal a season striker for someone.

How time flies, topical as it's Villa at the weekend, it's 6 years on Sunday since Mecheda bagged that last minute winner!

6 years, unbelievable!

Its a tough one with Falcao, he hasnt been good for us, by the same token a lot of that could be levelled at our style and quality of play this season.

With RvP in decline (imo) we only have Rooney and Wilson as recognised strikers, so we will need to buy, the question is who? There isn't anyone that immediately springs to mind. I wonder if we could get the price down for Falcao, at £43m its a firm no, is it definitely a no at £25?

For me, he's not even a 20m player. Utd's style of play cannot explain away a bad touch and terrible finishing.

Wilson...the jury's out for me, seen it all before...look at Kane, got his chance...taken it.

You'd take Rooney, RVP, Falcao and Wilson as your 4 strikers though wouldn't you? The question is how best to get them scoring...

Are we all agreed though now that Rooney is in fact a striker not a midfielder, something I've been arguing for years. biggrin

I think Harry Kane would make a great addition to the United squad.

It's too early to break the bank so I doubt that levy would let him go but It'd be an interesting summer target.

As for Falcao, forget it, he has had an entire season to prove he is up to the task and hasn't, either he has been injured or ineffective, a decent centre half will have him in his pocket, the Prem is way too physical for him.
