The sad thing is everybody is laughing at each other for getting booted out of the CL, but the rest of Europe is laughing at the Prem. All out before the quarter finals? We could end up losing the fourth place qualification for the competition.
Apart from City drawing Barca, the other two should have gone through. Liverpool went out with a whimper. Will this spell a period of holding the Europa League in higher regard, because it is more at our 'level'?

Great match. 2-0 down from the 1st leg, the mighty blues won 5-2 on the night, 5-4 on agg. Our 4th final on the trot awaits.

woohoo
fking hell 14000 posts in 41 months, how do you find the time to form a balanced opinion on so many subjects?
Why would I want to have a balanced opinion on football? What a bizarre suggestion.

If Chelski and Arse replayed their games, I'd expect them to win. Arse went out due to a lack of concentration in the first leg and Chelski, well, José's bus parking tactics and lack of ambition cost them. Neither team were out-played by a superior team in either leg. That's the beauty of sport, the unpredictability.

Citeh lost to Barca, no shame there.

I do however, think that FFP is having an effect. Well, it's having an effect in the leagues that aren't utterly corrupt.

Most leagues have a handful of competitive teams. Some even fewer than that. We have a league full of teams who battle hard every minute of every match.

No English Premier league team has an easy ride at home.

Certainly seems that way doesn't it, I would not be too bothered if we lost a CL place tbh, you'd just expect the money clubs like City, Chelsea & Utd to qualify year in year out & the CL would be the same for the unforeseen future
as it is now with the same teams in the last 4 year in year out .

I think it it would be great to see the likes of the also rans like us, Arsenal,Everton,Southampton & Liverpool fighting for the Europa places.

Or of course Uefa could make European football much more exciting by reverting back to the old 3 cups K.O.

Were still in with an outside chance of 4th but it is highly unlikely , but we couldn't live with the big guns in Europe & neither can Liverpool as the likes of Ludogorets & Basel proved this season. When it comes to Europe none of the English teams can get close to the elite. We shop in Ldle & they shop in Fortnums.

Everton however have taken the Europa seriously & i really hope they go on to win it.

Also, even though our teams failed to get into the QFs, none of them were so st that they couldn't even qualify out of their group. Therefore the Europa League is still an irrelevance to the CL qualifiers. It's not as if Chelsea can choose to enter the Europa instead of the CL, just because they think that they have a better chance of winning it.

Of course; that is not what I was getting at. More along the lines of our only possible European trophy winners will be from EL qualifiers or CL dropouts, and will teams and supporters be a little more happy to be in the EL than they have been in the past (with an outside chance of actually winning a trophy)?

I do like the idea of just having the three knockout cups, but where is the money in that?

No we couldn't , but next year you never know

I for one never ever envisaged we would get to the final in 2005 or 2007 - You have to be in it to have a chance -

Just too many teams and too many games in the Europa League. The group stages are particularly farcical.

96 teams in the playoff, which then go into 12 groups of 4, then 32, 16, 8 etc

Have the 96 playoff, then play another knockout, to brings the teams down to 24. Then 8 groups of 3, to play parallel with CL groups. Top team goes through, leaving 8. Add the CL dropouts and you have 16. Then can then play the remaining games the same week as the CL matches.

Having CL dropouts just devalued the competition anyway.

So you are saying you wouldn't want to win it - and with winning it get into the champions league just because its devalued from CL teams dropping into it?

Roma 2nd in league still in it
Besiktas top of league still in it
Wolfsburg 2nd in German league still in it
Napoli 4th in Italian league - still in it

I dont for one minute believe you cant do both - its a myth for me - like I said other day when we played Besiktas we got back 4am fri morn, bed for what say 6am? played at 12 sunday against the champions who played in the champions league - ran them off the park - these players are fit enough to play 2/3 games a week - if everyone keeps telling them its to much there mind will believe it even if their body doesnt.
One minute you have the youngest squad in the prem, next its to much to play Thurs / Sunday ???

What's you current league position?

What position did you finish last season, without playing Europa League?

When a team enters the Europa League at the first play-off stage, wins the Comp AND finishes top 4, then I'll believe. Until then, history is on my side.

I saw that signing and seems a good one. Also signals a departure of two (vlad & Kaboul at least).

Hugo off injured though...so I'll wait for the inevitable collapse!
