Sloppy passing by Bentaleb all game. Gifted them the goal. Can't really blame Walker, Rooney should have put it away first time. Had Eriksen scored, the game good have been so much different as we were on top and United conceding goal would have stretched them at the back. Gotta take your chances and score when you are on top. Lovely ball by Kane. I think that too many people look at his goals scored rather than his all round ability (I guess you don't pay too much attention if not a Spud) but I do believe he's the real-deal and he's going to be a star for years to come.

Not much to take from the match, from either side. We didn't look like scoring and neither did United. 2 labouring teams that still looked like they were in pre-season. Stats seem to support this: 50/50 possession, 9 shots each, only 1 on target by United and 4 by Spurs. 1/2 Corners, 12 fouls each.

Usual BT coverage though, eulagising the new United signings whilst demonising Spurs lack of goal threat, when the evidence over 90mins suggests that both team are far from the finished product and that if Spurs are going to struggle to challenge for a CL place, then United are really going to struggle to challenge for the title.

Transfer window staying open until the end of the month makes some of these early games somewhat farcical.

Agreed about BT. At one point Glenda completely slapped down the BT commentator after the latter had spouted some pro United bks.

They seemed to spend the whole first half gushing over Memphis Depay and willing him to score. BTW, why is he "Memphis" on his shirt and not "Depay"? Does he thinks he's Brazilian or Madonna? The game could become much more informal if everyone was just referred to by their Christian name.

BT are just ste full stop, even as a Utd fan my heart dropped when I saw the game wasn't on Sky

Tekno - he doesnt want anything to do with his dad who left when he was 4, so he doesn't acknowledge his surname.

At least we had a spud on the commentary team. It's either Alan Smith or the perennially antagonistic Redknapp junior covering Spurs games over on SKY.

Can't he just change it then, to Tennessee or Fantastico?

I actually like Danny Murphy - seems to say what I think most of the time. Not sure if he does SKY games though, probably just BBC.

Player power.....Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was denied having 'Jimmy' on his shirt years ago due to it not being his surname, bleeding heart story or no bleeding heart story.

Apologies for changing the subject, chaps, but following on from Jimmy Greaves' recent stroke, a donation page has been set-up to help with his physio. Apparently, even Piers Morgan has donated!

Why is Jimmy Greaves skint? Was Levy in charge of the purse strings back then?

Footballers earnt a lot of money back in the 60's, did they? That would explain why he was still playing for Chelmsford, Barnet and Woodford Town in his late 30's. He effectively retired in 1978, save for a few years of S&G in the 80's and the odd Newspaper column. Roger Hunt and the Charltons are the only World Cup winners who haven't sold their medals yet yikes

I look forwards to seeing Rooney top up his pension by turning out for Skelmersdale United in a few years....

Relatively, yes. Saint 'n' Greavsie would also have helped. Shame he's broke of course, I just struggle to understand why.

Drinking is expensive and you don't tend to make good financial decisions when pissed.

Looks like we might sign Clinton N'Jie. He appears to be Cameroon's version of Townsend (Runs fast but can't finish).

His stats don't seem to suggest he's the answer to the weaknesses in the squad to me.

If this is what Paul Mitchell black box turns up we are in trouble.

Not sure what you are struggling with. Footballers may have earnt more than the average wage back in the day but they were hardly "rich" by any definition. If you've spent you're entire adult life kicking a ball about, your prospects when you leave the game in your late 30's are pretty bleak. Unless you get into management (and are good at it) you have no career and no transferrable skills. I'd imagine life was tough for almost every ex-pro, once they could no longer make a living from the game. Certainly didn't get a final salary pensions. All the WC winners selling their medal would testify to this. I'd expect it's only since the beginning of the Prem era (and even then, only the really successful players) when players could actually retire from football and not have to worry where the money will come from (although countless stories of players who have squandered their loot abound).

Now you have 20 year olds being handing £50m for 5 years "work".....

There is that, although he's been dryy since '78. I expect all those S&G jumpers weren't cheap hehe

Why he's broke. Sorry, I obviously wan't clear enough.

After his successful football career he was on TV on World of Sport, SnG for 7 years and was employed by ITV as a pundit thereafter. He also had a newspaper column from the early 80s through to the present day. I'm sorry for him as an England legend that during his extensive sporting and media career he wasn't able to squirrel away enough money for his retirement and maybe some medical insurance.

Greavesie used to come to our warehouse to buy stock when our family owned a job buying company on the Commercial Road in the very early eighties. He had a small lock up in East Ham that was given to him to use by a chap named Green. He also used to 'run' with samples as a commission salesman.

He was skint and he was a drinker.
