Early days still lads. We aren't yet playing the high tempo, high pressing game from last year, new players in the squad will take time to settle. Liverpool can and will play better. One thing for sure - Mignolet needs to be more commanding in the box and work on his decision making.

Look on the bright side. We don't need to beat Madrid, only better Basle's result.

We will probably win that one easily, and get hammered by Basle.

My god your goalie makes some terrible mistakes.

Gonna cost you dear one day.
He has cost us enough in the past to be honest and just to look at him makes me nervous, not sure how we managed three points out of that game but chuffed we did but sad that we don't have the same belief as a team as last season but its to be expected with all the new signings I suppose.

Still I am over the moon just to be back in the CL and going on our early season form we will have to win it to get back in next season by the look of things.

Played 5, been abysmal in 4. Not the best start to the season but neither was last season in terms of performance.

I enjoyed tonights game although frustrating until Lucas and Borini came on.

The new players need to bed in but the full backs have made a great start.

Balotelli is basically the same player as Berbatov.
Borini needs to start every game if Balotelli starts to make the runs Balotelli doesn't make.

Will feel like a life time before Sturridge is back.

3 points. Most points we could take.

3 points, that's all that was available to us tonight and we got em. Skin of the teeth watching behind the hands etc etc but got em.

I really didn't think we were that bad at all?

The goal conceded was shocking though, but it seems that we will always be at risk to that by playing the way we play.

It doesn't matter how good your defensive players are, if you effectively play 2 at the back for large periods of the game, you're begging to get caught out.

Really happy that Balotelli got his first goal for us smile

There was no imagination up front. Can't play with just 1 striker.

Agree, 442 diamond suits us more, although I don't understand why Gerrard stayed at the back of the diamond, rather than just ahead with Henderson, with Lucas at the back?

Mignolet
Manquillo Lovren Sakho Moreno
Lucas
Gerrard Henderson
Sterling
Borini Balotelli

There seems to be a greater emphasis on getting balls into the box by the fullbacks, I don't think this is just down to them, they've been told to do it. This seems at odds with last season where we created lots of chances with neat 1-2's on the edge of the box (usually involving Sterling, Suarez, Sturridge). Maybe it's just a change of approach given the personnel available.

Certainly the change of formation transformed the game but left us vulnerable, as we were last season.

We need pressure on Mingolet asap, not only due to the mistakes but his distribution is awful unless he's rolling it out.

Gerrard simply has not got the legs to cover the ground needed if he plays on the sides of a diamond.

What I thought was scary is that once we made the change, we seemed to split into a defensive 5 & an attacking 5, with a huge gap in midfield ( as the diamond formation suggests!) . No link up play or runners tracking back left us hugely exposed, but the risk was worth it to get the goal. As soon as we went 1-0 up with minutes to go, we should have dropped in & filled the space, instead we had 5 players committed forward on the attack with less than a minute to go, with Stirling driving for goal instead of keeping the ball with a simple pass or taking it into the corner. We dropped points last season & still didn't learn from it!

Unless we sort it out quickly Real will marmalise us, & Basel will be much sterner test.

But we still got three points, and it's early days for the team so not too unhappy overall.

Mignolet was in no man's land, but I thought Lovren dealt with it poorly. It was like he had a chance to clear, and then slid in trying to clear the wrong way.

Henderson continues to impress, more so in work load today, but in previous games, he's really shown his all round games is massively improved.

Countinho is the biggest worry. I'd drop him for the next game and put Sterling in the middle and Markovic out on the wing.

In pre-season, Countinho was by far the best player, but he's not really done anything yet. It's worrying, because he should be that bright spark with the defence splitting passes, but he couldn't even get the basic passing correct tonight, must have gave the ball away sloppily at least 5 times.

Really need to see more of Lallana, I don't know how/where Southampton played him, but I'm struggling to see what we've spent £25m on. I know, I know, it's still early yet!

We really, really need Sturridge back, Balotelli's movement is not great!

I think he is needed as a striker up there. Lambert is similar to Balotelli.
I'm sure some will agree and some will disagree, but with Borini up there making the runs and keeping defenders occupied, it creates space for Balotelli and Sterling.
