Playing two strikers rather than committing midfield players forward will give us much better balance both in attack and in defense. Rodgers seems to have forgotten Borini who in Sturridge's absence would provide a good foil to either Balotelli or Lambert. Real's fullbacks had little to occupy them defensively, so were able to run riot in attack without fear of leaving the defense exposed.

Q&A James Pearce

I asked him yesterday about whether he would consider appointing a defensive coach and he dismissed the idea. He's convinced Liverpool have the personnel both on and off the field to put it right.
I like BR a lot - have a lot of time for him, the way he talks about the club, it's history, what it means to wear the shirt etc. I like his ethos in terms of wanting to play a high-tempo pressing game. I still think he is the right man to lead us forward, even if this season proves a total disaster.

BUT. The single sentence in the quote above smacks of arrogance. A good coach is one that is willing to admit where things are going wrong and identify quick solutions to fix them - not let them drag on. We are DESPERATELY in need of a top defensive coach. There is no two ways about it. If BR is being loyal to his coaching team that is to the detriment of the team, then this is a serious risk of how we will move forward in the future. If BR cannot see just how rubbish GJ jas been playing since last season but still insists on playing him in big games, this smacks of a blinkered approach. He needs to be able to objectively analyse where and why things are going wrong and needs to be able to think on his feet and provide a fix quickly which is distinct from a quick fix approach, like the signing of Balotelli was.

I think there are occasions when we could accuse BR of being blinkered, unfortunately. His fall out with Agger, for example. Good player, arguably our best CH on his day, despite being injury prone. And told he was down the pecking order and forced to leave. I think he might well be the right man to take us forward in many ways but he needs to be a bigger man and rise above things and do things for the best of the club, even if it means he might be wrong.

Can't think of a manager who hasn't been blinkered or blindly stuck to their plan to the detriment of the team at some stage though.

Arsenal moan about it year after year. Mourinho let Lukaku go on loan last year - even a half in form striker could have helped them win the league. Even ManU fans wanted Fergie sacked on numerous occasions only for him to go and win the league time and time again.

I appreciate BR hasn't won anything yet to instil the same type of long term optimism, but he did find a way to get the best out of Suarez, along with a number of other players. I still don't think the men at the top of LFC help him at all times either. However he has got a rep as being one of the more forward-thinking coaches in the game, so I'm willing to give him a bit more time.

PC just misses out but AL is more disciplined on the left of the diamond, and PC can wreak havoc for the last 30mins as can Mario.

I'd be happy with that.

I think that's the back four we should aim to start with always.

Allen did well in patches on Weds. Not sure about him coming in for Henders though. Need to be careful with Sterling too, he's struggling to make it to 90 at the mo.

Balo has had his chance, if he continues to play him after many ex players have described his QPR performance as the worst seen in a red shirt then Bren must be taking orders from elsewhere on team choice - hard to believe but no other explanation.
I don't believe Mario will play tomorrow Bren isn't that oblivious to the obvious.

Wenger and Mourinho are winners, their methods have been proven to be successful multiple times.

I'm not sure who gave BR the rep as being one of the more forward thinking coaches in the game, what I'm certain of is that this is the highest tier club he's ever managed and if he doesn't get his act together this season this will be the highest level he'll ever manage at.

I have the impression he has been waiting for him to 'come good'. Time to bench him and to come on as sub.

Can't disagree with any of that, but at one stage the same was true of Mourinho and Wenger.

Wenger won the double in his 2nd season. Mourinho I think won the league title in his first full season at Porto. Both picked up on teams that were arguably punching below their weight and rapidly transformed them. The Ferguson comparison doesn't work either. Ferguson arrived a winner also from Aberdeen. BRs in his 3rd season with us and can't seem to keep a clean sheet, has no idea what his 1st 11 is and has so far spent in the region of £200 million.

He can come good but needs help, he has a huge entourage but they are failing him we need Clark back but that won't happen.
I'm not sure where we go from here as we won't just start playing well it's just too disjointed and far away from a cohesive unit .
However were above Arse and Mancs and we will all be happy with 4th so let's hope this rag bag team of new, old and past it's get us there.
