I think other than Brasil as clear favourites then beyond that its fairly wide open.

Spain are a good shout but don't like pace against them.
Italy - look average on paper but are a good tourney side.
Argies - lots to play for, not brilliant defensively but have a few worldies.
uruguay - again lots to play for but a tough group - alot hinges on saurez for me.
France - depends on backroom and preparation
Germany - very strong, class everywhere and know how to win.
Netherelands - seem to have put camp issues behind them re four years ago but capitulated in the final - worst final in living memory since USA '96.
Belguim - dark horses - good young players and lots from same league who ahev played well this season - expect QF and beyond.

England - Well, we have some good players and I disagree we have at least one worldy in rooney if he asserts himself, stays fit and calm. I think if we were being bold, and went with an attacking formation we have pcae to frighten ANY team in the WC - I am expecting a really balanced side with plenty of left footers - something we've hardly had in recent years at this stage of tourneys - baines, sturridge etc I expect sturridge to have a big impact if I'm being honest. I'm hoping for QF - I'm sorry if I'm delusion - I have to hope we can do well or what's the point?

tourney fottbal isn't about winning 4-0 each group game its about peaking at the right time, I've always said that and its still true. every team will have one bad game and if you have that bad game in the groups you can still get through and peak...

c'mon england.

We must have different definitions of world class. My definition; if a team of footballing aliens landed and challenged planet Earth to a game, would they get in the squad of 23? If so, they're world class. Rooney wouldn't even come into the discussion. Not even close.

In '66, Banks, Moore and Bobby Charlton would have been straight into the starting 11, and no one from any country would have thought to argue.

Its an interesting way to describe a world class player.
Didn't realise we can only choose 23 players in the world. Nay mind.

Unlike other recent Euros and World Cups, I've yet to see a single car sporting an England flag out of a rear window.

The nation seems to be underwhelmed in the lead up.

ANd Martin Peters. He was a time traveller, was Peters. In 1966, Alf Ramsey said that Peters was "Ten years ahead of his time".

A very good point. Neither have I and neither have I heard anyone talking about it.

Poor old Martin. That comment haunted him for his whole career. Every time he hit a misplaced pass, someone would pipe up "it's not his fault, the other players are 10 yrs behind him".

He was seconds away from becoming the man who scored the winning goal in the WC final. But the Germans equalised right at the death, extra time was played, Hurst scored 2 more to get a hat trick and Peters became "what was the name of the other fellow that scored." He was seconds for superstardom.

I've met him twice. He's a thoroughly decent chap. Doesn't look much different 48 yrs later. Still slim, full hear of hair. Some grey and wrinkles but that's about it.

My predictions:

Brazil will win it.
Germany and Spain will be the big name disappointments (Out in group stage or first knockout round)
England will qualify from their group.

Some class in there and Neymar seems to play brilliant for them.
Great defence.
Brilliant midfield and strike force.
I think even if teams park the bus against them they have players who can change it up.
Unsure if Oscar should start for them though. Average most of the season.

After last nights performance, I can't see us getting very far at all.
Seriously need to up their game!

Don't think Sterling deserved a red card but Valencia did!
Tackle wasn't great but he did make contact with the ball & it was the follow through that got Valencia & no intent of harming him what so ever. Valencia reacted terribly & Sterling should have been applauded for not reacting back.

It was a striker's tackle and totally unwarranted in the context of the friendly and with the World Cup just about to start.

I hear what your saying, but don't forget last night and Saturday are about giving players games and seeing what they can do. Last nights team is probably some way off RH's ideal starting line up.

Sterling's tackle was a yellow card offence, and the reaction from Valencia was a straight red.
