Went to the pub early for something to eat and was looking forward to this but at 0:0 in the second half my wife said she's prefer to watch the US Open tennis - Tsonga vs Cilic and we've bailed on the football. It was dull. Am I right in saying it was a competitive match not a friendly?

That is exactly how I used to play(I always had loads of pace)the only difference was my sunday league manager noticed my short comings in that I didn't know what to do with the ball so I spent most of my time on the bench!

I am happy for him that he has the record but I bet he wishes he could deliver more on the big stage and it seems crazy that he has only scored once at the world cup.

Me neither. Apparently, last night's penalty was Rooney's 300th goal in top flight football. Having said that, he's no Harry Kane.

I guess it's because when he burst on to the scene, we hoped this would be England's Pele, or Maradonna, or Cruyff, Puskas etc. A player that would be one of the greatest to have ever played the game. We had the same hopes for Gazza and Owen and it never panned out, so Rooney was the next big hope.

But it hasn't happened. No only will he not be remembered as one of the all time greats, the current Fifa player rankings put him as no 36 in the world of current players, so he isn't even one of the current greats.

He's the same age approx as Messi and Ronaldo. Why hasn't he gone on the that level. When he was 18 he was streets ahead of them.

But thats asking an awful lot of ANY England player, the fact is due to a multitude of reasons, we just aren't very good. So you can only judge him on what he has acheived and he now has the goalscoring record, he has beaten Gazza, Lineker, Owen (who all the same criticisms can be levelled at)

As such it is an achievement, in the wider world footballing stage not much of one granted but he should still be right applauded

He's become the highest all time England goalscorer !

Comparing him to Messi & Ronaldo is nonsense as they are just on another planet & there has never been an English player that gets close to those two ever.

I'm no Rooney fan but i think everyone & even the ABU's out there really have to admire his achievement.

Not quite....

The BBC says:

What about compared to Gary Lineker?

Rooney edged ahead of Gary Lineker's 48 goals to close in on Charlton but, despite his wonderful achievement, the latter must still hold sway in terms of England greatness.

Lineker was a Golden Boot winner with six goals at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, adding four goals at Italia 90, including the equaliser in the semi-final that England eventually lost on penalties to West Germany.

Rooney has scored only one goal in 11 appearances in the World Cup finals, against Uruguay in Brazil. Lineker's England goals came at a rate of one every 136 minutes compared to 162.5 minutes for the Manchester United forward. Charlton scored his at one every 193 minutes.

He also has only one assist, although he has created 18 chances in those three World Cups, whereas Lineker made an indelible mark in 1986. Ten goals in 12 games at a finals is an outstanding record.

Rooney deserves huge respect and admiration for his feats and, while this is not a criticism, he still comes in behind Charlton and Lineker.

Agree with all of that. Lineker's mark of goals in World Cups set him apart as different class.
