No wonder ITV have sacked him.
Townsend is fking useless and clueless.
I don't even think he's that good.

Martin Keown said that if Ryan Bertrand went to Arsenal he'd be second choice behind Kieran Gibbs. Given Gibbs is in fact second choice behind Nacho Monreal, that would mean Bertrand would go from PFA Team of the Year to Arsenal third choice... Think Keown has headed one too many footballs! As for Jones starting in front of Clyne; that would mean, if Roy is correct, that LVG wouldn't need to buy him as he has a better right back already....time for a face plant!
Don't forget that at half time, Roy Hodgson preferred a defensive midfielder to go in at RB than play Clyne. This square pegs in round holes system rarely works.

Quote from Hodgson.

"Jordan Henderson did very well at right-back, we were thinking that we would be limiting our options if we replaced Phil Jones with another defender. It was harsh on Nathaniel Clyne, he doesn't deserve that, but it was the best way to get Adam Lallana on"
Also Jordan is not a defensive midfielder -
Really? I've always considered him as one but you see him more than me, fair enough. thumbup

Bloody Ian Wright on ITV's football coverage now. He's been on Match of the Day, BT Sport and now ITV this week.

Does he actually add anything to the football experience or is he just there as a box ticking exercise?

Vardy's injured, isn't he? Took two bad knocks in the last Leicester game, the second of which was when Gomes flattened him for the penalty award.

Good performance tonight in a game where the display was less important than anything else at all.

Anthems sung superbly, the FA got the pre-match stuff spot on and top marks for deciding to stage the game and not buckle under any pressure to cancel it.

England looked decent with, as someone else pointed out, the right people in the right places. Dele Alli booked his place on the plane to Euro 2016 tonight with that goal and Stones did too. In addition, Kane impressed me and in my opinion, Jack Butland isn't far behind Joe Hart now. Hart should definitely feel him breathing down his neck, that's for sure.

Downsides? Despite his assist, Sterling was poor and doesn't do enough for me. Runs down blind alleys and constantly gives the ball away, there has to be someone better in that position than him. And the only criticism for the crowd tonight was that bloody band... "Carnival de Paris", "The Great Escape", "Rule Britannia" and "God Save The Queen" are the only four songs they can play. Change the record lads. Finally, why is Ian Wright on every single football programme at present? Match of the Day on BBC1, Football League Tonight on C5 and tonight on ITV. This morning, he was moaning that the game was going ahead and they shoul cancel it... tonight sees him pocketing several shillings for being a pundit. Hypocrite.

Other than that, a decent night where the result was always secondary.

BREAKING NEWS. After tonight's 3-2 friendly victory over Germany, Roy Hodgson names his starting XI for the Euro 2016 opener v Russia.......

In a 4-4-2... Hart; Milner, Jagielka, Jones, Bertrand; Walcott, Carrick, Wiltshire, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Welbeck, Rooney.

Joking of course but at the end of the day, attacking wise, he will be chancing it sticking with the usual suspects. Sterling is out for 6-8 weeks meaning he'll be rusty coming back, Sturridge is too much of a risk if he goes with only four strikers and Rooney, sorry to say, is a busted flush. Not done it in a tournament's final stages for a decade now and it's time to build for the World Cup 2018 by going with the youth.

Teams that we play in the Euros will be scared stiff of Vardy and Alli running at them, Kane's unerring accuracy and the likes of Barkley and Lallana just in behind. Rooney is a handbrake on us going forward, both metaphorically and literally speaking.

What a magnificent victory for England, pity about Germany's 'onside' goal being disallowed though?
Commentators seemed to forget the fact that ofcourse if that goal perfectly legal goal had stood,it 'wouldn't' have been a magnificent victory, would it?and i don't think England would have come back going down 3-0 so early,2-0,well more in reach and less of a gulf psychologically to come back from.
I watched the game live and the highlights tonight and I've yet to see the linesman put his flag up for that decision.

Is it just me?

He's no Beckham. I can't see him being much of a positive influence in camp. In terms of strikers I'd take Sturridge, Vardy, Wellbeck and that other fellow with the mask can't remember his name. Plays for some plucky flash in the pan minnow side.
Diego Costa? He's Spanish.... hehe

I'd leave Sturridge on a beach somewhere, can't afford to take any player that can't be relied on to finish the match, same goes for Walcott and Wilshere.
Agree on all three of those, Mick. No room for passengers in a squad of 23, particularly up top where generally, teams take only four, maybe five players.

So here's the Squad I think we will be taking for Euro 2016:

Hart, Green
Terry, Cole, Johnson, Warnock, Jagielka
Lamps, Gerrrarrrrd, Barry, Milner, Wright-Phillips
Rooney, Defoe, Walcott

With the rest made up of members of who played last night but not getting a look in.
hehe
To be fair, I'd take five of those myself.

My 23 would be...

Hart, Forster, Butland (or Foster if Butland's injured)

Clyne, Cahill, Smalling, Rose, Baines, Walker, Stones, Jagielka

Henderson, Dier, Barkley, Alli, Milner, Lallana, Drinkwater

Kane, Vardy, Walcott, Welbeck, Rooney

I'd start with...

Hart
Clyne - Cahill - Smalling - Rose
Dier
Alli - Henderson - Barkley
Kane - Vardy

I don't think it's vitriolic hatred so much as simply thinking he's never lived up to the hype and has never performed on the big stage.

If he's truly the best option then pick him, but don't pick him just because it's Wayne and he's "world class" and Nike and the sponsors are breathing down your neck.
That's what it is with me too. I've nothing against Rooney per se but he has been elevated to this God-like status because for years, he was the nearest thing we had to a world class player. I ought to point out that he's never been world class and won't ever hit the heights he has before now he's turned 30 and had a decade of niggling injuries.

For me, he shouldn't be anywhere near the England team unless he returns to Man United fit, scores a box of goals and stays fit. Until then, we look elsewhere.

James Milner named England captain this afternoon.

Haven't read the thread yet so these are my thoughts rather than echoing others.

Underwhelming, poor after the excitement and energy and tempo of Saturday night. Atmosphere was awful, bloody band sticking to their "England Till I Die / Rule Britannia / Dario G / God Save The Queen" album again. Although I did hear one rendition of "Don't Want To Go To Work" which must have been started by a few Scousers....*

Pluses...

Vardy. Has to start up front v Russia in the Euros. No ifs, no buts, start him.

Kane. Not his best performance but still looked dangerous at times.

Sturridge, Walker and Rose. Not bad.

Drinkwater - booked his seat on the plane tonight. Neat and tidy display in a position that rarely gets noticed. Fighting now with Henderson and Dier for two places.

Minuses...

Forster - okay but doesn't look comfortable on the ball.

Stones - did that arrogant, cocky thing again tonight which led to the penalty. Needs to know when to act clever and when to defend defensively and learning tonight might just help in tournament conditions.

Milner - poor, gave the ball away too much and he is just ordinary at best.

Walcott - for me, lost his place on the plane tonight. Less than ineffective, he was awful. Two little runs when he came on, didn't get the decisions then sulked and hid away. I'd rather give his berth to someone who is honest, hard working and would bust a gut to play for his country, a Michail Antonio or someone similar.

  • - only joking lads.

Do people think Wilshere will make the squad? Not played since god knows when ... made of glass etc. No idea if he will play again this season. I think we have the players available not to risk him in this tournament. I've also bet my son a tenner he wont be there ... but then he is an Arsenal fan.
He shouldn't be anywhere near the squad IMO. He's not played all season and apparently he's had another setback so hopefully that will be the end of it.

As you say, there are better and fitter alternatives around that deserve their chance far more than Wilshere.

Milner will go as a squad player and a useful sub if someone gets sent off or as a last 15 minuter due to his versatility.

full backs look reasonably solid - Clyne, Rose, Walker, possibly townend, Baines has cooked his chicken I fear.

Centre halves, Well Dier can play CH and CM but I'd prefer him at CH at international level, probably alongside smalling - neither jags nor cahill have had strong seasons

the spine of the outfield could well be from Spurs and leicester which would be no bad thing as they have been the best two teams this season.

its too soon for Rashford, and rightly. I wonder if there is a choice two from three over Walcott, Young and Sterling...I very much doubt if Young will get the nod but I worry about the other two too as they go missing too often in big games.
I wouldn't take any of Walcott, Young or Sterling. Young's had a poor season, Sterling's injured now and won't have the game time to rediscover his average form from earlier in the season and Walcott flatters to deceive every time I see him.

Probably time to rev this thread up again, given that Roy will be naming an inflated squad for the warmups and the tournament itself.

Having seen Roy at The Emirates yesterday, looks like Wilshere will be going. While I think he's a good player, if selected it will make a mockery of the manager's insistence that players would have to prove their fitness first. Wilshere has started once plus a couple of sub apps and Henderson hasn't played for ten matches.

All I'd like to see is the manager picking players in form. Drinkwater and not Wilshere, Townsend and not Sterling or Walcott, Kane or Vardy and not Rooney up front. Yet I have this impending cloud coming that it will be the same old, same old.

I'm not saying I WOULD take Wilshere, just saying Roy will take him.

For the record, I would go for....

GK: Hart, Forster, Foster

DEF: Walker, Clyne, Smalling, Jagielka, Cahill, Rose, Bertrand, Stones

MID: Dier, Drinkwater, Milner, Townsend, Alli, Lallana, Carrick/Henderson

?: Rooney

FOR: Sturridge, Kane, Vardy, Defoe

(Quite a few changes since my last stab at picking a 23 back at the end of March)

Wilshire!! rofl

If we were to get to the semi that's 6 games in 4 weeks. 7 games if we reach the final. On what planet does anyone thing 6/7 games in 4 weeks is within Wilshire's grasp?

6/7 games in 2 seasons is about his lot.

Ridiculous.
