Southgate gets the job on an interim basis, the side piddles all over world cup qualifying and he's given the role permanently due to the 'momentum'.

We fail at the world cup, but this time it's because we had an inexperienced manager so we'll cut him some slack, then fail at the euros after.

Rinse and repeat.

Players are only coachable if they want to be coached. Young uns apart I can't see any England player who might fit into this category. Passionate, knowledgable, worldly and contemporary coach who isn't prepared to suck up to the FA blazers is required. Southgate all wrong. Bilic not a bad shout.

if his coaching skills dont even tell the defence how to set up against a long throw....

Very true.

Strange, because Neville was actually one of the best long ball throwers in the premier league at United.

I really don't get the comments that some people make about no talent blah blah. It's rubbish. We watch these players week in and week out, they aren't rubbish by any stretch of the imagination.

What they are is poorly coached at the national level. No system, no tactics, no clue about how to set up a team and when the media bigs up the latest flavour of the month the manager folds and shoe horns him in somwhere and throws everything else off.

Look at Italy. They've come into this tournament with people saying it's the weakest team in 50 years! We've all watched Pelle play this season, would (m)any have him in your club side ahead of Kane, Vardy or Sturridge? What about Giaccherini who was at Sunderland...Sunderland, and was complete rubbish.

Until they get someone in that can properly coach and set up a team with a specific way of doing things they will carry on down this road.
^This.....exactly.

But.....this is the FA we're talking about.....who are as clueless as all the managers they've appointed since El Tel (who they probably didn't want to appoint and couldn't wait to be rid off rolleyes)

Have any of you heard if Rooney has announced retirement from international play?.. He needs to, should have done it the same time as Roy.

You only need to look at Iceland, some of their players couldn't even get into Championship sides in the season just gone. Yet give them a system, give them tactics, give them a game plan and the result is greater than the sum of its parts.

Too many England managers have tried to shoe-horn the best XI players onto the pitch. The formation, the system, the game plan should come first, then pick the best players who suit that. What we need is no more round pegs in square holes.

Do we though?

Was listening to Chris Waddle after the game and he spoke a lot of sense. How many of the England players are the main event around which teams are built in the EPL?

I think it is a case of there being so many things wrong at every level that there is no 'easy hit' to fix the performance issues of the national side.

It will take a massive, concerted and organised effort from all involved, from top to bottom, to change what has become so ingrained over the years.

I doubt the commitment is there.

Until the FA exec gravy train is stopped, nothing will really change. The FA is run too much by management types and not enough people who know enough about football.

Exactly, but we all know that's not ever going to happen.

Bilic for me all day...knows the Prem inside out, young, good playing style, knows the game, speak sense, passionate about winning

Picking English will mean years more of crap,,, England rugby proves it doesn't have to be an English person
Less talk of Bilic pls; Super Slav's already got a more important job.

Yes I enjoyed Waddle's rant too, England players seem far too pampered, the sight of them wandering round disconnected from everything with their headphones on drives me mad. We don't have a Messi or Ronaldo but players who had half their work ethic would be nice, those players train and train to get better constantly and try new things, we have the likes of Wilshere and Sterling who reach a certain level and think that is it and they are perfect.
The approach Jones has brought to the England rugby side is constantly challenging the players to get better and alternatives in each position so players aren't complacent about their place in the side, also if something isn't working then substitute early on rather than wait for 85 minutes to bring Rashford on.
