You must all have watched these players from decades ago dozens of times, presumably, given that you can assess their relative merits with such confidence.

Ronaldo is not the most technically gifted player that I have seen, but he is pretty high up on that measure and also insanely fit, strong, fast and consistent. He may well be the most valuable player of all time for those reasons.

And yet you watch him against Poland this wwek, and he proved time and again why he isn't that special.

I love Smartypants contributions over the last two pages of this thread, not only do they mirror my own views, they prove that opinions can differ severely on the same subject.

He is seeing what I am seeing, pure class, something that stats will never capture.

Maradonna, Gazza, og Ronaldo, players that make you say omfg when watching their highlight reel. Not stats, not who was a good boy and stayed in shape and never got drunk blah blah blah.

I'm not old enough to judge before 1990, soz about that. Best sounds like he was a bit special smile

If that's true, then it might have been better to say "since I've been watching football, Gazza has been this or that" as opposed to stating he was one of the best to wear an England shirt ever or one of the best players ever. The vast majority of players that have played the game had stopped by 1990.

That's a fair comment, which is rare indeed from you (I kid I kid) hehe

Is Rooney and Hart really expecting to start in the World Cup qualifications in September,,, surely not..

The new manager needs to start off on the right foot and send a message to these and the like.

What do you think guys, who has survived from Euro 16?

Looking at Wales they have a system they stick to and every player knows their role, England seem to chop and change and put players in positions they don't understand. I don't think Hodgson helped with his seemingly random team selections and taking players who weren't fit.
Other teams appear to have players who enjoy playing, accept responsibility and work together as a unit. Our players seem sullen and scared much of the time, hiding behind their phones and headphones.

Just to put things in perspective, France are pumping Iceland 4-0 at half time.

Probably just as well England didn't scrape a win.

The bigger the French win, the more embarrassing for us, which is a good thing. I hope the FA bigwigs, Roy, the players et al are squirming in their seats.

Iceland have been talked up, but they are nothing more than a well organised League 1 team. It's a matter of national shame that they beat us.

I was thinking the same pre-match. Had Iceland won tonight or pushed France all the way it would have been an easy 'out' for England apologists... 'but look, Iceland are a good team...'. When the reality is that Iceland are a mediocre bunch of players talent-wise but play to their strengths and are fantistically well organised. As are Wales (with the added massive talents of Bale and Ramsey), who had they not played with so much fear / respect would have embarrassed us in a similar manner.

I'd like to think the French dismantling of Iceland tonight would galvanise the top brass at the FA that something has to be done about making England more competitive in tournament football. I'm not holding my breath on this though.
