It's the best realistic appointment the FA could have made GIVEN that they prefer an English manager. Sam Allardyce is a pragmatic choice; he is well known and liked by other Premier League managers, he can handle the media, and he's the right age (i.e. he should enjoy the on-off nature of a national manager role).
But more than all that, he gets the best out of what he's got. The England squad is full of talent, albeit with no world beaters. Sam will get them organised, they'll defend properly and they'll know what they are doing. I don't expect us to win a major tournament. But under Sam Allardyce I think we'll beat the likes of Slovakia and Iceland within tournaments. Something the Hodgson and Capello couldn't do.

Will Sunderland be compensated by the FA for this?

Perhaps it's the safe choice but I'm afraid it's just dull and thoroughly uninspiring.

I just don't get it and I'm sure we'll be back here in 3-4 years having heard something along the lines of "lessons will be learned".

Big Sam? Oh well, so predictable I suppose as it was all over the press over a week back.

To move forward imo it's the FA that needs complete reform.

Look at the board.
Dyke. Oh well.
CEO. Knows more about biscuits and snacks than football.

Oh, I can't go on, depressing.

Good luck Sam. You'll need it!

At least Wales have the (b)right ideas.

Sam takes poor teams and makes them competitive. They don't win anything but they don't get humiliated. That sounds just what we need. Not being humiliated is the zenith of my England aspirations. I don't expect us to win anything. But I expect to beat Iceland and although I expect Germany to knock us out, not 4-1 with them playing their youth team.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Sam "looks" like a traditional manager and esp will "look" like an England manager. He's very good at getting the most from a team and I seem to recall he had a fantastic trade record (a la "money ball" if anyone has seen it).

But, and it's a big but. Not won anything, really ever to speak of. Is that ok ? Maybe. I'd like to win trophies but realistically, my gut feel is Sam will get us near but not to the end.

Interestingly, missus mentioned him one day while I was watching footie and said " that name rings a bell, he's always mentioned. Is he like the United or Chelsea chap?"

And I thought, "no dear, he isn't"

Mike
Ps sorry for my Malbec fueled musings.

PPS Cloughie was the best England manager we never had which I still think 30 years on. Maybe Sam will come good with England like Brian did at Forest

So 'Arry was to dodgy for the England job but Sam is as clean as the driven snow as far as the FA are concerned.

It's a no-win situation for the FA.

They're never going to get the likes of Jose, Pep, Klopp etc., and have a preference for an English candidate. They tried to get Sir Alex at one time, but he turned them down, too.

Not sure who else they could have chosen.

At least Big Sam gets the most out of what he has available.

Agreed, he has never had big money available to buy star players.

Looking forward to lots of high balls into the box.

That's a myth. One of his tactics is to play direct like that - but, when he has the right players available, he will play decent football.

The key is that he knows when to deploy tactics to best effect. Something Woy seemed incapable of.

Great news.....lets make a list of numpty things to tell him and I'll send him them with a congratulations tweet tomorrow - (One each please!)

1. Don't let your centre forward take the corners (Kane)
2. Don't let the smallest guy mark the biggest guy at headers (Rooney)
3. Dont Play Joe Hart in goall. Just no, anyone but.
4. Dont Play Raheem Sterling ahead of Vardy...
5. Dont play James Milner full stop.
6. Any player involved in advertising poncy products, be it hair care, facial topiary or appearing in tabloid interviews boasting about your house, yes Raheem, thats you boasting about your inhouse barbershop, you tt, whatever, instant drop from squad. That pretty much sums up the whole Liverpool squad hehe
Finished that off for you.

I don't support England but this is disgraceful appointment. Some numpty with no big club experience gets the biggest football management job in the country.

Let's hope they'll lose EVERY match that this idiot is in charge. Farce.
