Given how utterly clueless Shearer appears as a pundit on MOTD I fail to see how anyone can think him fit to manage anything beyond an U10s side.
I'll agree he's no great shakes but he's not the worst! They should send Lawro on his way for a start ... he's just weird ...

For the same reason he took the job at Rangers. The challenge. If he does the business at Rangers he'll have huge adulation in a small pond, a very good wage and a worldwide reputation. Moving club would be sideways other than a handful at the very very top which MIGHT be a possibility if he starts getting CL success. Other than that the England job's the only next natural step for his career.

I think he'll win the SPL this year. And if he gets Rangers to the CL group stages the following year and better the next couple
Let's not get carried away. smile I think most reasonable Rangers fans would be satisfied with Europe, a cup and pumping Celtic twice given the road we've been but we live in hope. But can we not just let him get on with it under the radar of the FA and the mega money but diddy EPL clubs?

As you say pretty much any job outside the top four in England is a step down in every sense except financial. We've had so many chiefs in recent years I forget who actually appointed Mark, but it was definitely the best thing they did for Rangers, he's been a class act.

I'd guess he'd want a crack at the EPL or even abroad before the England job. He lives a block down from a friend of mine, I'll see if he can ask him when he's walking his dog. smile

Always amuses me this. And the qualifications and experience you have in the game that put you in a position to make a judgement on his views are?

Opinions are like aholes, everyone's got one.

Having seen a lot of SPL football i would honestly say that i could get Rangers into to CL next year and not even be on the touchline. Not saying that they are that good, what SPL team is?, but the overall standard in the SPL is dire at best. Two teams, well according to the press and TV and thats it.

I'd honestly say you're talking out your arse.

We have 12 teams and 2 possible winners. You have 20 and 4. The only real difference is Sky money (and Leicester).

And I'm not sure anyone in an England thread should be criticising anyone else's standard of football. You did just get pumped by Iceland.

Probably for the other thread, but any well organised team of pros should be able to to do well. Iceland have proved that.
Never mind history or pretty football.

One for the future who I think would both love the job and suit the job is Mark Warburton. If he continues for the next couple of seasons as he's started at Rangers then he'll be emerging as the best English manager in a long long time.
WTF would Warburton want to leave the best job in the UK for the poisoned chalice of England?

Paws aff. smile
For the same reason he took the job at Rangers. The challenge. If he does the business at Rangers he'll have huge adulation in a small pond, a very good wage and a worldwide reputation. I think he'll win the SPL this year. And if he gets Rangers to the CL group stages the following year and better the next couple then he's going to be one very in-demand guy, and rightly so. Rangers lack of serious money's the big drawback to the plan, but that would become obvious to one and all if the rest of it falls into place. The huge England wage and the potential to join the 'immortals' might well winkle him out of Ibrox.

But first he's got to win the SPL this year. Wait and see. Can see it coming myself. And the direction it's moving in there is no way Rangers under him will be getting beaten by Lincoln Red Imps or any other silly little teams or old dying dinosaurs in the CL qualifiers. Guy's a winner. Obvious to anyone. He was FUMING when Rangers lost to Hibs in that cup final. He doesn't like second place.
You'll do well to keep him. What he achieved at Brentford was amazing....and as someone who has a soft spot for the Bees (old man was a life long Bees supporter) and I went to see quite a number of Bees game under MW, so can relate to what you are saying.

The guy's got a special feel about him. I'd say 3 seasons away from management at the very top level. And a natural for the England job long term.

We seem to be treating it as a day of celebration. It should be a day of national shame, that we haven't won a thing for 50 years.

Yeah, for me, he dun good is exactly the sort of insightful analysis I look for in my pundits. As an aside, what 'qualifications' does Shearer have? Sure, when it came to sticking a ball in the net he was as good as it got, but it doesn't make you a great orator on the beautiful game.

I presume, if we were to go by your logic, every ex-pro is an absolute genius when it comes to technical analysis and we should hang on their every word in order to improve our own knowledge of the game we all love. I presume, also, that you have no opinions on anything football related lest it be at odds with an ex-pro's views.

Some years ago, I remember the lamenting of the passing of the last surviving serving soldier from WW1.

It won't be long before the last few heroes from WW2 pass on.

Followed closely by the last few people who actually saw England win the World Cup once upon a time....

I see that Wheelchair is injured yet again. rolleyes

I keep saying it again & again, there has to be a deeper reason for his inclusion in the England squad, not just that Woy thought he was somehow going to save us single handed. Over the last few tournaments, there seems to have been some bizarre decisions regarding clearly unfit players taken in the squad, who by some massive coincidence also feature heavily in billboard or TV commercials for sponsors of the England team. There needs to be an investigation to determine if these sponsors are putting pressure onto the manager and senior figures in the FA to make sure that certain players are picked or at least take up a space in the squad.

I have nothing against Jack but surely he knew he wasn't fit and the England medical staff MUST have known he probably wouldn't have lasted a full 90 minutes & certainly not the whole campaign. Given his recent history, there must have been reasonable doubts and if there weren't how have they got to be on the England medical staff? Every England fan I know shook their head in utter disbelief that his name was on the squad list. Now he has gone down again, it must be the case that there is no way he was ever fit enough to get on the bus.

But time is of the essence in football & I'm sure that will be plenty of excuses as to why there won't be a full and proper investigation in the embarrassing disaster that was the Euro 2016 campaign (just like there wasn't for the last WC.) and now we have been lumbered with The BFS I'm sure that a glorious future awaits us... rolleyes

I really wish someone like Winter would do some digging into this because its not just being a sour loser, something stinks.

Wilshire is a very good player, but he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the England squad until he's played 2 solid years for his club injury free.

It's utterly pointless bringing him in when he's fit, he plays 2 or 3 games for England, he's man of the match, you start thinking about building a team around him and bam....out for a year.

Wouldn't worry too much about our midfield now anyway chaps. Big Sam likes to bypass it if he can. wink

In all seriousness, I don't think he is a big fan of the Jack Wilshere type of midfielder. Tends to go for a more industrial type like Noble, Collback, Nolan etc. I could see Drinkwater featuring quite heavily in his first team if he keeps playing well for LCFC.

James Milner has retired from international duty.

Was he ever on duty?
