I'm curious why people think this?

I do get that our media seem to have an "interesting" way of treating people, but far as I know he wasn't chloroformed or kidnapped, he could very easily have said "Look I've just been given my dream job, the one I always wanted, I'm on £3m a year, I've got millions in the bank, I need to stay whiter than white so whatever the opportunity is I'm not interested thank you" and that would be that, no story.

But he didn't so here we are.
