I watched an episode of the Vietnam war on iPlayer, followed by Simon Reeves journey across Russia. Not a massive Reeves fan, but both shows were interesting. Seems like I made the right choice - gave up watching England a while back, as the games always made me nod off &/or get seriously grumpy. a complete shower from what I've read here & elsewhere.

Im glad I forgot about this match and did the decorating instead!

I had enough after the last few games. Same old England
Sounds like it....but does anyone really expect any different when it comes to the FA. Appointing Southgate was just another FA masterstroke.

And I too completely forgot about it until seeing BBC this morning.

If that wasn't England best team, what is?

Lallana & Alli are better than Oxlade & Henderson & I guess Rose would be a better option than Bertrand.

I really think we miss a Coutinho / Eriksen type of player.

I have a feeling Russia is going to be a disaster all round.

if henderson is our midfield solution without alli and lallana then we are in real trouble.

and someone tell me how Ox starts for England when he was blatantly out of form at arsenal and is benched for Liverpool????

ox looked like an under 11 running around playing against under 16s...woeful play.

Rash looked like the only one even trying in the first half but then he went quiet. Sterling as a no. 10? do me a favour. this was like the last tournament. plan A isn't working, we've no plan B.

when a team sits back like that we're not going to get in behind them so the defence needs unlocking with a bit guile, brilliance and a few great passes. Henderson is no the man to provide that....

it was very disappointing. hey ho we might do better than Argentina...look out for a dodgy ref in their last qually....

But Hart was MOM? In truth I'm not too sure about him either.
He only got that on the strength of the save, as the decision was made at 85 minutes. Had they waited then Kane would have mopped up with the goal and the MOM accolades (such as they are...).

What a shower. Poor passing, unable to keep possession, lack of movement off the ball, pass back to keeper, limited options, just the same England performance that is all too familiar.

Of course, we'll easily win next summer, no doubt about that.

I'd have given Rashford MOM. Hart played well enough but Kane was hardly active before his goal.

I didn't watch the game as I knew it would be boring as hell again. All other occasions in the past couple of years I've hoped to see something different but it is never the case.

I'd prefer to see something like a 4-1-3-2

Butland
Walker Jones Cahill Rose
Dier/Chalobah
Sterling Alli Lallana
Kane Rashford

I don't rate any of our defenders defensively at the highest level. Haven't had a decent RB since Gary Neville and the same at LB with Ashley Cole. CB's we had a ridiculous amount of options a few years ago but not anymore. Yes we would concede goals but at least have a bloody crack going forwards!

Unfortunately the likes of Hart, Delph and Henderson should be nowhere near the team that will actually get picked but we all know the reality by now.

It's the same old story. Unless you get a half decent manager then there is no hope.

There is plenty of underlying talent there...we see it week in week out with our teams. We don't have a manager willing to play a style and pick specific players (not just names or big clubs) to do that.

^^^^

sorry - have to disagree there. we don't see English talent week in week out in the premier league.

the clubs have taken the PL money and built themselves the dynasties to see their survival long into the future for a lot of clubs.

the FA is increasingly powerless vs the premier league and given that the national team is still run by the FA - I use the term run loosely - that is still a massive problem.

its an old argument but still hugely relevant. point the finger in whichever direction you want - foreign managers, selection policies, purchasing and loan policies, club finances, TV money all can be deemed partly responsible for the current state of the national team....oh and the FA again of course.

the success of the junior England teams this summer will be for nothing if the players winning this summer don't get top flight football week in week out.
