Hodgers is now saying his team lacks intensity, a term he uses a lot but does anyone know what it really means in the context of a football match? Despite the rivalry I hope you lot put in a shift tonight, surely nights like this are the reason teams strive to get into the CL, playing a weakened side is just plain wrong IMHO. I feel especially sorry for Gerrard, he should play.

In all seriousness, I actually feel a little sorry for Steven Gerrard. This could well be the last great European night of his career yet it looks like he will miss out through being rested. Sometimes as a manager, you have to do the right thing by players and to me, that means BR resting him against Newcastle and playing him tonight.
Goes without saying that you might struggle to make top four this season so there's little chance of drawing RM again next season. Year after that, Gerrard will surely be retired... I'd have given him a game tonight as a reward for years of loyalty.
I would agree. But I guess Rodgers' priority is the league position, so strongest (in his eyes) team should start the Prem matches. Can't feel too sorry for Gerrard, the money he's on. For that sort of money, you should be expected to take all the decisions on the chin, surely.Goes without saying that you might struggle to make top four this season so there's little chance of drawing RM again next season. No drama, I'm sure there were a number of people in here saying he should never start another game for us a few weeks ago...
Who said that? Gerrard should have been rested against Hull. He should have come off against Newcastle. He shouldn't have played every minute of every league game so far this season.
This is more than just about Gerrard. If you want to try something new, you sure as hell shouldn't be doing it in the Champions League away to Real Madrid. The way our manager is talking he has already conceded this match.
As a fan I hope we win, I hope Gerrard at the very least comes off the bench and scores. But using Gerrard as an impact player should not be an experiment we start with this game.

Maybe so, FM, but I think that this goes further than just what money he is on. Playing at the Bernabeu is a career highlight, not sure if he's played there before.
He got about 5 mins as a late sub when we beat them there in 2009.He starred in the return fixture though when we thumped them four at Anfield. God, was that only 5 years ago? Feels like a lifetime.

I can see the argument for playing him in the Prem. But the Prem aim this year is to reach the top four so you can qualify for the Champions League. If you are then going to leave out your talismanic skipper and an influence on the pitch, is there much point in qualifying apart from the finances?
I wonder how much of an influence he is on the pitch now - its not been noticeable so far this season. After xmas LAST season he was almost the SG of old - influence and good performances - after a poor start. This season another bad start - I just wonder if this is age related now and those good performances will be fewer and fewer. Bit of a gamble when you might get one...RedTrident said:

Big night tonight, no shame in losing to RM, but a solid performance would go a long way.. and maybe even scoring!

The trophy room is pretty impressive, isn't it. You've heard of the European grain mountain, European wine lake, etc...
Now you know where the European silver mountain is.

If the rumours are true about resting not only Gerrard but a few others that's an embarrassment as a Manager...and a shameful thing to do to the supporters who have paid the money to travel out there.
I hope it's all paper rubbish.
Put any team out we'll still cheer on the boys in red. The atmosphere and the experience has returned payin for flights an hotel an ticket. It's been unbelievable here.I hope it's all paper rubbish.
Might be a 80,000 capacity stadium but the 8,000 reds that are probably in Madrid will make themselves heard. Will be amazing tonight. Off to the ground now for a pint before getting in! Come on you Liverpool!

Rodgers might surprise us all and get something out of the game today, as a supporter I'll be ecstatic. But if he thinks today is a day to rotate the squad then he is being disrespectful to everyone who follows the club.
