The Official Liverpool FC Thread [Vol 9]
Discussion
The problem with using moneyball tactics is it was taken from baseball. At the time the use of statistics was seen as a massive change. The problem with baseball is that although it is a team sport, a lot of the game is effectively a 1 on 1 sport, pitcher vs batter.
I really don't think you can use statistics in the same way in football. For example if you look at pass completion as a statistic, if you are playing nice safe passes you'll have a high number, vs if you are trying to make risky passes etc. (That's obviously a very simplistic view but hopefully makes my point).
I'm all for the use of stats when they mean something but I think with football what you see with your own eyes is more important.

Interesting read ! Don't know how much he is in "the know" but never the less a good read !
Fascinating article. I can't help but think there are far too many people involved. So bureaucratic as to stifle any independent thought, gut instinct or quick decision to even consider at a player just made available, when one is required.Interesting read ! Don't know how much he is in "the know" but never the less a good read !
It all rings true to the bits of info I get.
Seems a bit of a stupid system to me and I will genuinely be surprised if FSG change their attitude to the club's finance and management. But football is mental and things happen!

I agree. I think stats have their place but they're not the be all and end all in a chaotic unstructured game like footy.Henderson has signed

probably cost us 30/40m to replace Henderson looking at his stats

Can I also just say no one is sure if this guy is the real deal or talking complete and utter bullst
Sounds reasonably legit if you look back through his tweets. From his recent tweets, it looks like:-
1. Marko will be out on loan as they like his effort and attitude but don't think he's strong enough at the moment.
2. FSG thought they'd agreed a deal with Sterling, flew back to USA and his agent changed the goalposts. They won't be held to ransom and are prepared to sell in the summer if he doesn't sign the deal that was agreed. With that in mind, alternatives are already being sought (incl Walcott).
3. Looks like we're in for Memphis Depay, who wants to come to Liverpool - we're flying out to agree terms next week
4. Rafa is a definite no-no as FSG were advised against him when they were looking for managers last time.
5. Luis Enrique deffo being sold in the summer.
6. We're very keen on Berahino - Lambert may go in the opposite direction as part of a deal.
7. Konoplyanka is also someone we're keen on and he's keen to come, apparently.

Depay will surely go to UTD with his huge connection to LVG, not to mention Champs league and the wages they can pay compared to us ...no goer for me - we cant compete against the real big guns when it comes to players .From his recent tweets, it looks like:-

Agreed on that point. Reading the tweets again, apparently its his agent that has been impressed with LFC's approach and "the promise of first team football" (!), and so a meeting has been set up to discuss terms. The player DOES want a move to England. But as you say, if LVG has cash to spend, he'll prob go there.Edited by Flip Martian on Thursday 23 April 12:31
I also hope number 6 is not true - we need a top draw striker - not another with potential , we already have Origi coming in
I would take him if we were going for another top draw one. If we get rid of the 3 we have got we certainly need 3 coming in or 2 if he see's Raheem as a future option there for next season.

Hopefully Ibe has the potential to fill the Raheem role if he leaves.
I would like a top class experienced striker (not sure who...) but also Ings or Austin, they are both young and would not be hugely expensive.
Origi (excuse spelling) will need some time to settle in and DS will never play a full season.
Feel sorry for Lambert, don't think he has been a given a fair chance

TBH I am hoping Raheem stays , would hate to see him at another UK club I would like a top class experienced striker (not sure who...) but also Ings or Austin, they are both young and would not be hugely expensive.

I too would prefer someone with experience. From those tweets it looks like "the committee" think Berahino and Walcott would do the job. Ings is still a possibility but doesn't seem to be top of the list.
I think Sterling's attitude stinks (if those tweets are accurate). Agree a contract and then when City/Chelsea etc come sniffing, go back on it and want more cash. All he has to do is tell his agent to get a deal with LFC wrapped up and he will. If he's happy for his agent to play silly buggers then he has the wrong attitude.

Sterling is good and has tons of potential but I think he (or his agent) think he is a lot better than he actually is, he is certainly a long way from being the finished article, despite being in the England team.
7 goals from 29 starts this season (2600 mins on the pitch- a goal every 371 mins)
