I am not a dedicated football fan and I am certainly not "trolling" this post.
As football enthusiasts, can you guys enlighten me as to what is going on with the game?
I'm looking at the past month, where we have seen the remaining English teams knocked out of all European competitions.
The Premier League, the best in the world? really?
Going back 3 or 4 weeks, there was a MUFC European game. I watched some of it. I have to say, I was amazed and disgusted at the level of cheating/feigning/play acting going on. Is that the norm now?
Furthermore, in the same week (I think) there was a story about managers having to be separated on the side line.
Then there's the racism/sexism/homophobia that's been whipped up in the last 3 or 4 weeks.
Not really sure how the game can sort itself out, but I do feel it needs to.

Money, more money, pressure, winning at all costs mentality, endemic short-termism, lack of any decency/control/education.
That's the current PL for you. The Steven Fletcher pic doing the rounds at the moment probably sums things up, compared to something like Bobby Moore doing an ad involving a few down the local (even if he would have rolled up in a nice motor).

Europe - Add skill and weather, take away money & be liberal with the win at all costs (it isn't cheating, honest). I've watched a fair bit of Spanish footy over the years and generally like, but the money inequality and especially the falling over really grate, especially as someone who also is a rugby type.

MUFC European game ? you must be mistaken sir.

Although Wayne did fall over when there was nobody near him last weekend but that was his rather funny goal scoring celebration.

We all moan & groan about the game but we just cannot get enough of it & everyone who's in the game & runs the game know's it. I think it's a case of put up with it or don't watch it.

I don't think anyone really thinks the Prem is the "best". Most watched, most valuable, most entertaining, most competitive top to bottom certainly, but not the "best"

As with anything these things go in cycles, we had a period of dominance, now its in a down phase.

People are very confused on how the premier league is described.
Most entertaining yes.
Has the best clubs in the world, no. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, Atletico, PSG, are all better than our top 6 and thats just naming a few.

Cheating is bad but it doesn't happen in every game, so when it does the media go all out.

Managers clashing, there's so much at stake in games, you can imagine tempers rising.
Like in the Champions League there's millions of £1s involved just for winning a quarter final.

Back in the day etc etc money wasn't a huge thing back then with the sport.
Alot of players would have came from the streets now too so they'll naturally have an attitude/ temper/ horribleness about them.

You're right of course. I think it was an FA Cup.
As for "can't get enough of it", I'm not so sure. I've had enough of the play acting and theatrics. I know it's not all matches, but essentially, the game is riddled with players trying to cheat, hood wink and con the referee and supporters.

Why is this accepted by the fans and supporters? I don't get it.

PSG - Can't help thinking what will happen to them beyond 2022. RM & Barca are sort of debt-ridden freaks, but will always continue as is & Atleti are what they are (and most likely still skint and back to being something else in a few years - Valencia are next).

Cheating - Grey area, but find me any top level football in a meaningful league where it doesn't happen with depressing regularity.

As for current players & the streets, are you getting confused with Pathe newsreel cricket?
Most of the greats of the game came from impoverished backgrounds & while some had expected issues, they didn't behave like spoilt brats, or wave supercars around to flaunt the proceeds of mediocrity. They also had far more miserable upbringings, generally speaking. I can't recall anyone recently who had a Garrincha standard upbringing, as an example

I would safely say that 95% of football fans despise the international games this weekend that means there are no premier league fixtures this weekend.

I do agree with what you are saying about the theatricals week in week out but it does give you ammunition to have some banter with opposing football fans , (Liverpool thread excluded ) but at the end of thee day we are all still in love with the worlds greatest game.

Bobby Moore was also an alcoholic who crashed whilst 3 times over the limit with his young son in the car. He also used to wear a chaffeur's hat to lessen his risk of being pulled over.

Hopefully the rumours about pub fires and insurance claims aren't true though!

Sorry - should have added my point was that there was less media focus on such things back then. And plenty of dodgy geezers playing football then (as now).

Football has done of lots things right...backpass rule, outlawing tackle from behind, making it a more skill based game but yes, cheating is very frustrating. And the fact we can see it replayed from several angles for days afterwards on dedicated sports channels just emphasises it further.

To mash up a metaphor, the plural of coincidence isn't trend. English teams have done very well in Europe over the last few years, we have consistently had teams in the knockout stages and even the finals. One year when knockout results go against them doesnt mean the league is poor.

When it gets to the knockout stages then the strength of individual clubs would seem to be more relevant than leagues, and Bayern, Real and Barca are undoubtedly the best clubs in Europe, they are winning organizations that far outshine their domestic competition.

English clubs have had a very solid record in Europe in the last decade.

The problem with football now is MONEY, far too much involved, mega contracts given before they haven even proved themselves.

Not playing full strength teams in cup matches so they loose, what happened about wanting to win every game and beat the best.

No real disciplinary action for bad behaviour which is disgraceful the cisse spitting incident. should have been banned for 1 season/no wages.

So out of touch to the fans in the stands watching now that it is loosing the magic that gave everyone so much joy. What message does it send out to young people watching now, the change from when I watched as youngster has been huge and not for the better.
