Did a Liverpool fan just mock Utd's performance in the transfer market?
Until very recently, Liverpool had spent about as much as Utd over recent years and were still dogst. Probably in the bottom 2 or 3 in the Prem in terms of making decent signings.
I don't understand the reference to Andy Carroll, though, as he was bought for Monopoly money, wasn't he? For a joke, right? No? Those were actual pounds?! Good Lord!

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but, in Liverpool's defence (my god it felt dirty saying that), I understand that the fee they agreed to pay for Carroll was a percentage of whatever they got for selling Torres to Chelsea, and because they absolutely shafted Abramovich on that deal it meant they massively overpaid for Carroll.Until very recently, Liverpool had spent about as much as Utd over recent years and were still dogst. Anyhow, a completely agree that the overwhelming majority of Liverpool's signings over the years have been average at best.

He's your Andy Carrol. You not peeved at a 15m loss in 12 months? Those prawn sandwiches aren't getting any cheaper...
In short no. We didn't spunk money on a st player, he bottled it and chose the easy out. Besides I'm pretty certain the fee to Real would have had several clauses and bonuses attached so who's to say what amount we have lost, but if it is 15m I'd rather lose that than have a player who doesn't want to wear the shirt.anonymous said:

£15m is nothing in the Prem. It wouldn't get you a striker that would stand out in a Sunday league match. I have no problem at all with a strategy of taking expensive punts at potentially brilliant players. As I said the other day, I think the top players are good value relative to players that go for £10-30m, plenty of whom are very average!hornetrider said:
The Daily Mail writes about football now? I thought it was just for celeb tittle-tattle and lazy racism. Di Maria wasn't really bad at all. He just wanted out. I expect Utd aren't far off breaking even on him given how much of the fee is likely to have been deferred and conditional.
Having Berbatov and Tevez on the list shows that it is utterly stupid. Players bought in their prime and sold on when they reached the end of their top flight years. Hardly flops, expensive or otherwise!

Tevez was added on Citeh's behalf. Your third was Veron.
I know. Veron is nothing like as bad a call as Tevez and Berba. He was a mixed bag (at best) so maybe deserves to be on the list. £28m was a lot of money back then. A few others look a bit suspect, too. Carroll is not one of them! Probably the worst big buy ever in the Prem. Torres was fairly poor but still playable; Carroll was a stone over weight, hungover, lazy and terrible. I remember literally laughing out loud when Liverpool spent £35m on him. I think it was about that time that I heard him say in an interview that he wasn't going to stop 'Enjoying his lager' just because he was a big player now.
I wouldn't have had him on a free.

Don't forget the exchange rate on DM. Effectively bought for £50m at today's rate, so a lot of the loss is a forex loss. Di Maria wasn't really bad at all. He just wanted out. I expect Utd aren't far off breaking even on him given how much of the fee is likely to have been deferred and conditional.

Shame he's going as he is a game changer, but his heart wasn't in it ever since the burglary and sending off against the Arse.

I am betting that we won't see any more signings except MAYBE Pedro in & DDG out the door at the last minute for not enough cash with neither Bale or Ramos coming the other way. (At which point we will have been stuffed by Perez yet again )

Watching Berbatov in his pomp was worth any financial loss, What a footballer he was , i was gutted when he left my beloved football club, A few others look a bit suspect, too. Has anyone mentioned Robbie Keane? £19m in and £12m out 6 months later.
Just wondered as there are hundreds of examples where we've all spunked money on ste and lost a fortune. Spuds tend to do it on managers, as they like to offer them £600m a year in wages amd transfer fund then sack them 3 months later and give all the players they bought a free transfer.
Scousers do it on a full team pretty well every season and we chose to do it either on expensive tat a la Veron, or squad based garbage like Klubfoot or the Djemba twins (any United fan should be able to translate)
