So that would leave us with:

Romero / Valdes / DDG
Darmian / Smalling / Jones / Rojo / Shaw / Blind
Carrick / Schneiderlin / Schweinsteiger
Valencia / Mata / Herrera / Fellaini / Young
Rooney / Depay / Martial / Wilson

which would need to be the core of the squad for the PL, CL and FA cup. I'd assume the league cup would be a mixture of youth. Of course on top of the above are the likes of perreira, Mcnair etc who could come in if really got thin.

It's actually not that bad when you consider that several of those above can play in other positions too, it's just for me lacking that final top class finisher to get the goals.

Are depay and Martial really forwards?

They're gonna have to be now yes. Whether they are any good at it time will tell.

Agree. The squad looks good and much more balanced, we finally have players in the right positions. Only big thing is a top class name up front to score the goals. We are going to be reliant on Rooney having a storming season.

This was deliberate by madrid,Alledgedly a deal was agree int he morning, then madrid spent the rest of the day trying to get the price down, culminating with them not processing the paperwork in good time ,which they easily could have done.I hope its exposed and de gea gets pissed off with them and signs a new contract with a 100m release clause.
Based on RM's official statement the 8 hours Utd took to make some minor amendments to a contract - so minor that RM signed it - seems a little odd.

I'm a bit worried about the lack of striking options but other than that I'm delighted with our window. Look at how much dross and dead wood has been got rid of. RvP, Falcao, Hernandez, Nani, Cleverly and the icing on the cake - Evans. All were past their best or not up to scratch.
Martial may or may not be up to it but at least he's the potential to be a target man so better than Hernandez and can't be a worse Centre Forward option than Fellaini who, despite doing the business when asked as a sub, has no real goal threat except from crosses.
We've got a better looking squad than the past 2 years so I'm looking forward to seeing if they can gel as a team and find a cutting edge.
It's not all doom & gloom for me

RvP, Falcao, Hernandez ! Bit harsh labelling these three as dross.

Surely you Utd fans cannot be happy that the only other option LVG seems to prefer is Fellani up top other than Rooney .

If Rooney gets injured what options do you really have ? For a club the size of Manchester United to only have one out & out striker is just crazy given the amount of games you hope to play this season. Can you really see Rooney playing 60+ games in a season at his stage in his career,

We should now say to DDG, sign a new contract and you can go to RM in 2017, unless you want to sit in the stands and not play in the Euros.

This is all so similar to the Ronaldo deal, he signed, stayed for another year and we got a far larger sum.

As I said, the striking situation's not great. RvP? Passenger for 2 seasons. Falcao? The kindest way to put it is that it just didn't work at all. Hernandez? Nice lad, great attitude prior to the loan but he wasn't and isn't what we need. His first touch is woeful.
Rooney's definitely not an out and out striker either- he's a number 10 and tbh I rate Herrera better atm in that role but for now, as you say, he's the closest we've got.

How can you determine who plays in the Euros?

Doesn't his current deal end in 2016?

The Spanish team will not pick a player who hasn't played a match in 6 months

That would be a good result for us, we'll have to wait and see what lvg does with him. Need him in the team.

On the Martial fee

Apparently its €30m up front with a further €5m each year of his contract, it could rise to a lot more but based on the following

€5 million each time Martial is the top scorer in the Premier League, to a maximum of € 15 million.
Another € 5 million will be due if Martial wins Golden Boy.
The final € 10m will be paid if Martial won the Balon D'or career in Manchester.

So apparently thats where the disparity in the amounts come in to play, safe to say if we have to pay the full amount I dont think anyone would be bothered

Well of course I cannot be certain, but can you imagine ANY national team doing it? Joe Hart has sat on the bench for 6 months and not played and he gets chosen for England? Wouldn't happen, maybe as a backup but no way would they be first choice.

Of course I cannot know this as a fact but it is logical, I know it and DDG will know it.

does that mean DDG effectively can leave on a free at the end of this season? if so that's even worse than the debacle over contracts, irrespective of who's fault it was....

you have to feel for the player too...but any how lets see him back in the side, ipswich should be a useful warm up... hehe

Martial and Depay buying future potential and not really an investment at those prices...I'm bemoaning the lack of domestic talent going in to the top flight yet again during this window....

who has been the marquee domestic player moving clubs??

Yep, but then he always could. I guess the trick was if we could get a decent price now if he went sooner. Whatever really happened he is now ours at least until January, so we have until then to get the most out of him. If by some small miracle we can convince him to sign a contract in the meantime then we can go through it all again for the next few years.

Where we really messed up was not having him tied to a contract beyond this season years ago.

Marquee home grown player moving this summer? Value wise its Stirling to Man City I suppose, unless something unlikely happens with Stones before the window closes.

Or he can play in the stiffs, sit it out for a while then pocket enough cash as a signing on fee that one European Championship won't matter a jot.
