That is a fair assessment; it has been for a while now.
Arsenal did what they had to and then let you have the ball for 60 minutes. I think after 5-10 minutes of united having the ball, it was obvious that it wasn't going to take much to keep a clean sheet.
That's a bit harsh! We had a few good chances. Rooney is becoming absurdly bad, though, which is worrying. Dropping him would be such a big deal in the press, but he just isn't performing.Arsenal did what they had to and then let you have the ball for 60 minutes. Could easily have been 3-2, besides letting the opponent have the ball is not the way Arsenal normally plays. And if Arsenal is really that good, they should've scored a 4th and 5th as well. I wouldn't get too exited about Arsenal. They still have a terrible defence and a bunch of hit-or-miss attackers. Credit to them for all firing at the same time and tearing Utd to shreds. But I would have backed any half decent team to be leading big at half time once it became clear that we had no plan to protect the back four...at all. It was shocking!
Rooney is playing awful, I've always been a big defender of him as it's not just his goals but his presence on the pitch felt like we had an extra man at times. But he's just playing poorly, maybe it's the way Van Gaal is asking him to play, maybe not but one thing is for certain and that is the fire and aggression he used to play with and was loved for looks like it's completely gone!
Memphis needs a kick up the arse too!

Interesting article in the times, apparently the United players were baffled by lvgs instructions, they wanted to play tight in midfield and hit Arsenal on the break...the way, we have played and beaten them over the last few years.
Lvg wanted them to play the high pressing game, hence the schwines craziness .They were also perplexed as to why the most mobile center mid player was on the bench .
Makes sense in relation to the performance.

The players did look very confused. A pressing game against Arsenal was never going to work. I do worry slightly about LvG, as I could have told him that he was asking for big trouble with that midfield. I would have played 3 central midfielders from the outset, and probably not both of Schwein and Carrick (as they are both dead man against pace).

Don't fool yourself into believing that Arsene'al are currently in a position to control the outcome of games against good opponents. If they did, they wouldn't loose their matches against lesser ones like Zagreb, olympiakos and West Ham.

I agree with you that they might not be in a position to control the outcome against good teams, but they did control the game against united. Getting three goals then allowing united 2/3 of the pitch was 'in control'. No cutting edge in the attack meant that Arsenal could take that chance with allowing united the ball.
selym is right, after the first two goals arsenal controlled the game, they didnt need to press, could sit back and try to counterattack.
The only important event after the third goal was the save by czech from martial, had that gone in 15 minutes before half time,I would have fancied us to get a draw, but it didnt .

LVG is too set in his ways.
He, like most Dutchmen, comes over as loud and dogmatic. More volume than insight, compounded by poor English.
Once our players are thinking about the half time rant or post match bks-ing, their focus is not on the game.
He is picking the wrong players in the wrong formation x poor tactics. IE not good enough.
Time for LVG to step aside and let Giggsy run the show.
Yes! Kick Ole Dad Dutch upstairs and let the lads get out there and play football.

I'm starting to wonder whether his mind is too focussednon England, the Euros and stretching his goal tally, than he is in playing for and captaining United. He needs to do something, even a fake injury after the international break just to sort his form out. Gassing Station | Football | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
