The last time United played a season of free flowing entertaining football was 07/08, Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez era. Since then its been effective/functional football with the odd spell of of attacking free flowing football, for example, the start of the 2011/12 season before the 6-1 against City. Even last season there was the spell where United were playing flowing football with the wins against Spurs & City.

I'd rather win the league and win games than lose 4-3 by going hell for leather and winning nothing.

You don't think there has been a noticeable attempt to move away from that dreary pass backwards /sideways stuff at the start of the season ? I think it's very noticeable. Its not helped by rooneys abject form ,nor the current crop of injuries ,but I think it's very noticeable.
There are not many easy games these days, the top teams are worse than they used to be and the rest are better ,
Not really. Saturday was terrible apart from the last five minutes amd there was no Rooney to blame for that.

Absolutely not.

If you watched the game, especially live, you'll have noticed a couple of things.

Our movement is dreadful when we have the ball. It's statuesque, and it takes the wide men days to get wide. The movement when we don't have the ball is very good. The aim of the game appears to be to get possession and keep it.

To illustrate the sideways and backward passing point, virtually every corner we had Jones and Mike went up for them, and almost every one ended up being a short corner and the ball ultimately not even going into the box. I think one or two ended up back with DDG. That says a huge amount about the lack of risk taking that is "the philosophy".

Also equals the number of irrelevant passes we've made. Awful again.

Second half very indicative of how we've played this season. Looks like we're going out. Really don't get the fans on here that think we're doing well.

C-Lou-less van Gaal? Certainly seems so. I know the players are the ones on the pitch with ste control and crap pass completion but ffs, I don't believe for one moment that they've forgotten how to move into space to offer themselves for a pass or how to play an incisive through ball to feet. Phil-fking-osophy my arse. Either the sorts his head out or for me he can fk right off.

WTF was that. Absolute st performance today, don't see us progressing to the K.O stages.

Even if we do qualify we'll be humiliated by the first good team we play against.

It's just your league position that is stopping this becoming a full blown crisis. That was pretty bad tonight.

Mate, I really don't think the ko stages will be an issue (unless our current manager falls ill and takes a bit of a break until after the Wolfsburg game).
I am so pissed off with this style. This squad have it in them to do far, far better with the right instruction and freedom of expression. Keep the strict discipline for defensive areas but let the team play.
At what point does this 'process' yield results? Cos if it's a cup we're expecting, I think we can forget it this season.

The only positive is that if we qualify, we'll probably be top, so not face Barca, Real or Bayern, and avoid total humiliation.

Bloody hell this team really is struggling to adapt an attacking style of football. What is going on? Drop Rooney and adapt a new style with the players that are maybe been held back by an overly cautious manager.

Watched the first half and then told the wife she could have the TV back and watched the second on my phone. Not good enough
