I like Blind, and he has been a great servant to the club, including playing well out of position.
But the bottom line is that he wont cut it at CB and is not Mourinho's favoured type of defensive midfielder (too slow). I would rather see him go and play elsewhere than rot on our bench. He is too good a player and too decent a bloke to deserve that.

I've got to say I agree with this. As much as I think he's a good player and would like to see him stay, I can't see Mourinho playing him. And again, as above, too nicer bloke to be rotting away on our bench. Would like to see him go abroad though, so that we don't see him playing for a rival. But the bottom line is that he wont cut it at CB and is not Mourinho's favoured type of defensive midfielder (too slow). Congratulations to Marcus Rashford for making the final England squad. Much deserved and I hope Roy plays him.

Don't see the point In keeping Carrick but letting Blind go. Blinds much younger and IMHO is a better passer of the ball.
It's a toughie, the better ball player conundrum. Carrick's passing is of a very high standard but he is so slow that his brain would need to speed up to keep that standard up. Blind will improve.selym said:

I reckon it's guesswork. Mata is purely historical but Blind is unbelievably a decent player. Why doesn't Mourinho loan him out and buy a £65m 37 year old replacement instead?Black can man said:

Maybe Paddy was talking out of his arse though, who knows. The club haven't confirmed the Carrick deal at all, as far as I can see. Carrick's passing for me is still better than Blind's (when he actually really tries in a game anyway), but he needs someone alongside him to cover his lack of legs. A lot of the time that's really restrictive, so for me I'd go with Blind over him in most games. I don't see we have any other options in that deep lying ball playing mould, so letting Blind go would be very odd in any case.

Carrick is too slow. Physically and of mind. Paddy does talk a lot of bullocks to be fair. He was on 5 Live after the cup final saying talk of Maureen coming was absolute rubbish.

I wonder how much mental slowness is due to having to try and interpret the philosophy in game though. I mean it's normal to need a moment whilst deciding between attack plan 4.4a, 4.6f or 2.3d (and then between defensive module 12b or 17x seeing as how you were just caught in possession). In fairness it is just a choice between pass it sideways left, or sideways right, but those numbers make it so much more confusing. Rooney seems to have had the same issue - couldn't play by instinct anymore so needed more time to work it out.Paddy does talk a lot of bullocks to be fair. As for Paddy yep, he does. I think sometimes the club use him to float things, see how it goes down. If it bombs then "oh, it's just Paddy at the drink again" . Plausible deniability kind of thing.
I think the slowness is inherent in Carrick. Look back 3 or 4 seasons and he was exactly the same. Mister sideways and slow. He then had the "hard to believe it's not Scholes" season and maybe another one after that. He's now reverted back to type. He does a job, but not someone I'd keep.

He had a role to play when Scholes was in the team, which he did superbly. He then excelled when he was allowed to be playmaker on his own. He controlled the pace and flow of every game brilliantly. LVG destroyed that with his philosophy. Whilst Carrick has got slower with age, I think it's premature to write him off just yet. Alpinestars said:

He should go and join the rollercoaster that is Newcastle United. Next year could be a big one to be involved in.snorky782 said:

He's a jack of midfield trades, a master of none. Not the best holding midfielder, and not the best creative midfielder. Great if you want to slow the game down, so ideal in LVG's set up.Gassing Station | Football | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
