Too many mistakes from players who ultimately aren't good enough for the standard expected.
This. Would have been a different game if Smalling and Blind were awake from the get go. Not the only culprits though by any shot, and JM really needs to think hard about this approach. That said, 3 games in 6 days including Pool and Chelsea away? That's pretty brutal. CIty next too...But:
We are in just as much of a mess now as we were before, one very bad result doesn't change that any more than one very good one would have. It won't stop everyone from predicting our demise, of course, but that comes with the territory.
Reality is we ARE rebuilding... It can't happen overnight or even in one season. Anyone expecting anything else is totally underestimating the waste and horrible recruitment that has occurred over the past several seasons and managers (and yes, I include SAF in that partly).
Wether Jose is the right man time will tell, certainly we need to do better than today. Unlikely we will see such a poor performance again from Smalling and Blind though, they really let themselves down.
At least the league looks every bit as unpredictable this season as last.

Chasing its past? How does that work??
United over the past decades obviously got accustomed to a certain level of performance, supported by growth in revenue, sponsorship and kit deals, etc, etc. Becoming one of the biggest clubs in the world. When things go backwards you see similar patterns with other clubs. Supported by false expectations, not being realistic considering the quality of the squad and the (growing) opposition.
But that's not the message United's board might wanted to communicate these past seasons. Becuase it doesn't sell shirts etc.
They sacked a manager who won the FA cup last season and finished the EPL season on equal points with City, subsequently hired a new big name and bought the most expensive player in the world. Not the best player, but the most expensive player.
But expecting what ?
United isn't rebuilding, it's stumbling from name to name, expecting miracles.

Done that twice, made no difference.
Spent a bloody fortune, made no difference.
Sacked off Rooney, made no difference.
What else is left? Just play the "kids"?
Stick to the team that played the best matches this season, from the start, that's without Felliani in CDM. Spent a bloody fortune, made no difference.

A slightly different view. Just got back from the game and I thought we played pretty well.
Giving a goal away in the first minute made it a different game to what Jose would have had in mind. Courtois made some very saves, and Chelsea nicked a fortuitous second. We tried attacking in the second half and got done by some good finishing and poor defending twice.
Overall, I think we need to change the game plan a bit. It's a bit too easy for teams to defend against Ibra up front in the middle. Especially when we are chasing the game. I'd start playing players in their natural positions and not play Ibra. Maybe Rash up front with Martial and Jesse wide. Micky or mata number 10. Harry and pogba in midfield and blind as anchor man. Left back, and CB are still a problem. Especially with Bailly out.
I thought out fans were brilliant seeing as we were 4 down and still singing. At one point Conte turned to the Chelsea fans asking for more from them. 5 mins later he turned to us and applauded.
Anyway, I think we can afford to take chances now and no one will begrudge Maureen if he does that. Play young, play pacey and play players in their natural positions.

And where's Mkhitaryan, one of the best players in Germany last season.

Yeah you guys sounded very good on the Radio . Did the players get any gip at the end for swapping shirts and stuff?
Well hopefully Baily's injury is not as serious as feared, but knee ligament doesn't sound good. Smalling and Blind looked good last season as a pair, but had a fair amount of cover from midfield too. Not that we have much other option - Rojo or maybe Darmian don't inspire much confidence.
Maybe it will force JM's hand into playing Carrick in a 3 in midfield with PP and AH.

So rather than just congratulating him at the end, JM was allegedly having a go at Conte for geeing up the crowd - magnanimous and classy in defeat as usual
Conte should have shaken Maureen's hand at 89mins and walked off down the tunnel like Maureen is fond of doing (unacceptable in my book though and he can't do that at OT as he's look a dick walking down the touchline on his own) ...I agree with Alpine that Utd did not actually play that badly! The score line flatters Chelsea to an extent.
Nonetheless, we still do not look like a team with much shape or much of a clue how to break a team down. I agree that we need more pace in the side (or at least we need to make more of the pace we do have).
