With regards to Milner RT - He will be anything but a squad filler for us - as far as everyone knows he has been given guarantees of a starting role for us and in CM - thats the only reason he is with us and not City who offered him 160k a week (I believe we are around 12k) I also believe we have given him a very large signing on fee between 5-10m so its no FREE signing like people think.

120K a week plus say 5m signing on - over 4 years £30 million.Cheap signing.
Milner is a decent player BUT the sort of high level journey man who enables the high class players around him to excel. Decent top end PL signing, but hardly designed to get the fans pulses racing in anticipation of watching him touch the "This is Anfield sign" is it?
Anyway - looks like we will find out about Rodgers this week - one way or the other. Also looks like Klopp, Ancelotti and Rafa are off the market.
Also Danny Ings and Nathaniel Cline - hardly got me on the edge of my seat waiting for the season to start.
Without two blockbuster signings whoever is the manager will have to be a miracle worker to get this team in the top 4. Or have a very winning smile.
If our main targets really are Milner and Benteke, then I agree with RT that our formation will be changing. I think we can kiss goodbye any chance of ever recovering the lovely fast, flowing, attacking football we saw when Suarez was here. I think we'll end up with something that would suit both Benteke and Balotelli. And dare I say it, but possibly something a bit more 'mid-table'.
What worries me is not necessarily the calibre of player we're buying, but that we desperately need a midfield general and there are no rumours that we're in for any one who can lead our game.

With Milner a cert to start CM thats him and Hendo in there - will we go for 1 big signing for CM or keep with what we have?
I am not judging signings yet, far too early we have no idea if they want to spend any money yet, if they do want to spend decent money on more signings these make perfect sense as as they bolster our squad and give us more strength in depth - if they are the sign of what all our signings will be like get ready for another 6/7th placed finish.

I hope Can is moved forward to midfield and that the Defence improves enough so that he can stay in midfield
So in a midfield 2 it's Can and Henderson. Strong enough? Not in my opinion. In a midfield 3 it's Can, Henderson and Milner. Is that 3 mam midfield really strong enough defensively and capable of creating and scoring goals?
We then play with either a front 3 or a number 10 behind a front 2. Coutinho plays for me in the no 10 and on the left of a 3 so that makes Lallana a squad filler. 25 million for a squad filler!
The 2 strikers need to be able to play alongside each other or across a front 3. We have Sturridge (if fit) that can do that. Maybe Origi but that's really an unknown. Mario is best as a front 2,same for Benteke. Ings isn't dynamic enough to play across a front 3. We're a dynamic striker short.
The likes of Laser, Ibe, Sterling if he stays, don't feature in this set up. In many ways I see Milner and Ibe taking Sterling's place. I don't think they're good enough but I think that's the plan.
I think what I'm saying is that we have too many average players (regardless of what we've paid for them) alongside players that just don't fit in the way we're setting up to play.
For what it's worth I think we need a proven dynamic striker and a strong box to box central midfielder. Ings nor Milner are these sorts of players. Bring in these 2 players and the midfield and attack is transformed from a mid table line up to one that will compete for top 4 providing the manager isn't a loon.
RT you are right - we do need 2 big signings - 1 FW, 1CM, also the RB (Clyne I will deffo take)
Get those 2 right and we will improve massively.
Ps Ings is more mobile than you think, one of his best attributes I would say is the ball at his feet taking people on - good option for 3rd/4th striker, we just need to make sure we get 1 more in (someone proven)

As a Saints fan who dips into this thread occasionally, it's fascinating to see the expectations of Liverpool fans and the reality. examples:
Clyne - He might come to Liverpool, but he wants Champions league football every year and I'd say that he can get it. We've all seen the 10 million bid with a year left on his contract, but I don't see him coming to you if Chelsea, Man City or Man Utd put in a bid.
Schneiderlin - I might be surprised, but I really cannot see him coming to you. He can have Europa league staying where he is and is good enough for the champions league
Selling us back Lovren/others - We don't want them back. They chased the money and good luck to them, but we've replaced them with equals or better
The challenge I think you face as Liverpool fans is that you have expectations of challenging for the title and attracting the very best players and managers. I think you're below that very top level now with Man Utd, Chelsea and Man City being able to buy up the very best before you get them. I'm not saying my team is going to compete, far from it, but you need to sort out the recruitment strategy (Thanks for 50 million last year by the way) and develop a structure which generates more truly world class players. You've done some of that (Sterling as a good example), but many Premier league clubs have not. (I think Southampton are closest in having a system which works e.g. Bale, Walcott, the Ox to give a few examples)
I guess I'm open to being shot down in flames here, but I think many Liverpool fans have unrealistic expectations of what their team will achieve and end up being consistently disappointed.
That all great and romantic but you are forgetting 1 thing - MONEY - I imagine we pay a lot more per week than you do Clyne - He might come to Liverpool, but he wants Champions league football every year and I'd say that he can get it.
