Predictions of where Liverpool will be in league next season come the end of Vol 10, which may be around November?
If we get a decent striker and perhaps another decent player then top 3. If we have the same lot of players and a few new potentials who don't add anything (Origi?) then it's going to be another long season.

Hard to disagree with that.

I think Man U, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal will strengthen even further so I'm not sure we can breach the top 4 even if we strengthen further.

Reality check - if we get a decent striker we will almost have as good a side as MC/Chavs/Arse/MU so I reckon we would be 5th, maybe 4th if one of them has a poor start, 7-8th if we do

hehe who thought Memphis Depay was joining us. He's goin Utd.
No chance we would be able to lure a potential star if others are in the frame.

Although it's not official yet it does look like we've got him.

When I saw the stuff about Depay to Liverpool there was a certain glue sniffing vibe to it.

Knew there'd be no chance. Only transfer talk I listen to about our club is from James Pearce or Tony Barrett, everything else is ste laugh

There were only reports that Depay's agent was impressed with the way Liverpool had approached - that's a million miles from "who does Depay want to sign for". smile

Who ever leads Liverpools negotiations is clearly not hitting the mark.

Contracts not signed, players going elsewhere.

I understand wage structures give little wiggle room these days, but from what i have seen and heard from people who seem to know what the club think and do, he was very high, if not top of the hit list.

The worry is we had held talks with the player, so he hardly brought the project

Our only real hope in the transfer market is finding another Suarez, The 4 teams above us will offer a lot higher wages, ECL and 2 of them offer London over the northwest.

We will end up with someone none of them wanted or hadn't scouted, The plus side is whoever we bring in will be better than Mario.

ST called it all along - another player we probably wasted a lot of time on -

Scout these players for 3 years - waste st loads of money on going to watch them, writing reports etc then wait till there a household name and let one of the big big boys sign them haha great philosophy - you think they would have learned from last 3 windows

There was in reality with the dutch connection etc only 1 club he was really going too - it was just a case of if they were in for him or wanted bigger (ie bale)

Disappointing thing is, he's really at the same stage in his career as Suarez was when we bought him.

So if the ManU's of this world are now buying the 'really good prospects', and we can't hope to compete with a club with a valuation 3x ours, who does that leave us with!!?

I don't know whether our scouting/Ian Ayre are effective/useless, and frnakly I doubt many on here do unless they are on the calls / in the room with them at the time.

If the scouting team do a great job and find a perfect player for us , even if he is an overlooked talent (and Depay wasn't) do you seriously think the player's agent doesn't leak the approach or immediately pimp out his product to rival teams, and use LFC interest to prick up the ears of others? I would argue he is not doing his job if he doesn't.

So not matter how good our negotiations are, or whether we match wage offers of others, we are still up against the usual suspects - and we should expect to lose out regularly to London teams, regular CL football, higher perceived prestige of MU, stupid wages of MC or some other factor (LVG close link with the player).

Most clubs scout over a long period and waste stloads of money on watching them, writing reports etc...there's no guarantee the player will want to sign for what we offer. He might be a total breadhead and gone for the money, he might just want to play for Van Gaal. That's hardly the major negative you seem to think Liverpool are guilty of. Its just football, hardly worth getting upset about. We are where we are. It would have been a bit of a coup to get him. We didn't. We move on.
