Thinking on - if he was that good, you'd think a big club would have picked him up?
Surely you could say the same on Torres/ Suarez then?
Suarez had just bitten someone (the first time) so was a bit toxic to the big boys.

Torres I think just wanted to go to Liverpool (and it was only a couple of seasons after winning the CL)

Did you miss the world cup? he then went to Barca - or they not classed as one of the big boys wink

A big club did wink
Missed out the word "former"..?

hehe
You arse laugh

On other (and more dubious) news. Liverpool apparently are willing to listen to offers for Lucas. Great news if true, never been a fan of his tbh and as I see it we've only ever had a good half a season out of him.

I think he'd demonstrated at Liverpool that even with the biting he was more than worth the risk having proved himself worldclass in a league other than the pretty weak Dutch league.

Even then you lost out on about 15-20 million on him.

OptaStats tweeted that no one has made more tackles in the Prem since he moved to Liverpool. Though I'm struggling to think of another player who has consistently played as DM for 7 or 8 seasons.

But he is very injury prone...

Hmmm, sorry but you seem to be struggling with this. You signed Torres in 2007, and Suarez in 2011. I believe you were rightly regarded as a 'Big Club' at this time. Since then you've been in decline, and I think most sane observes would put you outside the 'big club' bracket (but only just). True you almost grabbed a stunning title last year when you had Suarez and Sturridge terrorising teams and outscoring your leaky defence, but that wasn't enough was it?

You've taken Everton's place as being 'almost' there, (Everton having fallen back further) struggling to win trophies and struggling to qualify for the Champions league. Therefore, and as a consequence, you've missed many of the big signings and have started to feed off the big clubs cast off players, picking up discontents that cant break into the first team of the clubs that can win the Premier league.

I cant see you winning the Europa Cup competition this year. SO you've gone from a club that was winning the Champions league to a club that isn't in the competition. When Torres and Suarez signed you were definitely Top 3, now you are not top 4. You can be, but you are not. Brendan thinks you are but he's wrong.

The premier league has several brackets, you've slipped from the top bracket to the secondary bracket. You probably lead that secondary bracket, but its going to be hard to break back into the Top 4. It will take a disaster in the realms of Uniteds bad form last season under Moyes to get back..... Who do you thinks going to have this disaster? City, Chelsea, United or Arsenal?

I'm not wumming or trolling here by the way - its a grown up discussion.

Suarez was probably one of the most exciting players in the 2010 World Cup for me. I said to a Red friend the day you signed him that he could be the difference you need to win the league. Stunning player, with mental problems.

I think the point being made is that whilst we still were in the CL when we signed Torres/Suarez, they were obviously extremely talented players, the like of which City, Real, Barca buy every year aside from their big marquee transfer.

Whilst we're not in the same position as back then, not being in the CL regularly, but then Firmino isn't in the same league as Torres or Suarez when we signed them either. But Firmino is still a player you'd expect to go to a club regularly in the CL, backed up by the fact that both Utd and City were actively tracking him. So we can still be excited to have signed him, along with the fact that he looks like an incredibly exciting player - just the type of player we missed last season.

I agree that the guy could have huge potential. But honestly, do you think you've overpaid for someone that might be the next big thing, just to ensure you've got him before he's snatched up by another club? Or is the sum just now the going rate for a maybe player, with 45-50 being the rate of the top talent?

I wouldn't really know Firminho from Charlie Adam - BUT the facts are there is rampant inflation in both salaries and transfer fees.

There will be the odd anomaly but 45-50 seems to be entry level top talent to me now. Look at Sterling.

And in the end - who gives a st about the money?

We have paid 21m for him ? Rising to 28m on certain clauses ..is that really that much?

I don't think we've overpaid. If we'd bought Firmino from Ajax or Porto nobody would be mentioning his fee, it's just that he's come from Hoffenheim and that nobody has had a chance to see him play in European competitions.

Great topic on Benteke on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/LiverpoolFC/comments/3bjl5...

I'm not saying he's my favourite choice, but of most of the names I've seen mentioned I think he's the one I'd be most happy with this summer.

Tony Barrett of The Times has just been mentioned in a tweet that said the England under-19 coach Sean O'Driscoll has left his position to take over as Liverpool assistant manager.

Very left field appointment. He's a quiet, meticulous manager who did well at AFC Bournemouth and Doncaster, not so much at Bristol City, Nottingham Forest or Crawley though. His coaching ability is pretty decent, by all accounts, but he's not the best talker. I got an interview from him last season and he's quite difficult to get stuff out of.

Strange choice if true.

Well it's well documented that BR does enough talking to the press for all the staff at LFC! hehe

In fact BR's silence in the wake all of the happenings at LFC since the end of the season has been incredibly conspicuous!

I always thought that any real talent shown in the Bundesliga inevitably became a Bayern player. Lets hope they are not kicking themselves if this one turns out to be good.

An assistant manager who has only ever done well at Bournemouth and Doncaster.
I was really hoping for someone stand out.
Rodgers makes alot of bad decisions. The assistant manager should be there to help out I think.

Rodgers is young who one day may become a great manager but I was hoping for someone who's been there and done it in football to step in and help out at the club frown

Another.
Yes.
Man.

That's my take on it without looking at what the fellas done.
