Better off buying Southampton's development system. Cheaper in the long run!

Shaqiri to Stoke would be mindblowing. I think we should still pursue an interest at 12m, if that's a genuine figure. Yehvan Konopolonononononoyanka, apparently available on a free now?!

We really do not need anymore of that type of player

CF has to be the priority now

I think the thing with Lovren is that the system/tactics that Southampton employ flatter him slightly. I think he's a good defender though and could be very good again. Just that the system that Liverpool employ makes nearly all defenders look nervy and generally awful.

Think about it. BR wants defenders to be comfortable in possession, under pressure from the opposition, good at passing. If defenders had all these abilities they wouldn't be defenders, they'd be midfielders.
I think this is a very good point, and on reflection we are probably overly critical of our defenders considering the way we play.
Lovren was gash last season and much of it had little to do with us not having a defensive midfielder in front of him. He couldn't even get the basics right. If we play a back 4 he won't get a look in if Sakho remains fit.

That might be but the season before he was one of the best CBs in the Prem. Let's hope it was just low confidence/settling in and he doesn't go all "Torres".

I think he'll end up being a very good Premiership defender. Maybe not amongst the best, but I think he'll be a success for Sunderland.

I had TalkSport on in the car this afternoon and 1 of their reporters said Benteke to Liverpool will be finalised in a few days.

Not sure about that one, really. But hey ho...keep positive...

TS are the only guys reporting this. All the other journos still think there is an impasse over the asking price.

Do you have an alternative in mind?

Well seeing as I've not heard of some of this Summer's incoming, I had rather hoped one would be a speedy, mobile striker from God knows where. Every time I've seen Benteke (admittedly not often) he's been anonymous and not very mobile. For a club that's had (in my lifetime) Keegan/Dalglish/Rush/Owen/Fowler/Torres/Suarez I'm just hoping we don't sign a David Hodgson or Andriy Voronin - someone perfectly good and a tryer but not really top quality.

For the money is Benteke really the best we can do?

I just cannot see him being much different from Carroll. Have to say I am pleased with the Clyne signing as a perfect fit for right back.

Carroll was a huge knee jerk reaction signing after Torres left right at the end of the transfer window.

We've scouted and considered Benteke for at least a season now - I'd hope that those in charge have considered his playing style and feel confident that he'll work in our team.

Fair play to FSG that's over £260M they have given Mr Rodgers to invest .

I really hope we don't sign Benteke. With Rodgers playing his preferred style of play, I just can't see where he fits into this team and for the money he would cost, I think we could invest it better. Also I'm not one to judge on one game only, but he was woeful against Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Just my 2 pennies worth and happy to be proved wrong.
He was woeful against Wales the other night. A back 3 containing players from Swansea, Hull and Reading easily kept him in check.

As an aside I think Ashley Williams would improve our defence but as a Wales fan I hope he stays at Swansea.

Williams is too old now for a big money move - I think / hope he has committed himself to the Swans for the rest of his career.
