I don't think you can add Mignolet to that list given his unceremonious drop from the team last season.

Nor do I think Milner is just going to walk straight into a guaranteed starting position.

Oh I think Milner will. I can see him being the experience to replace Gerrard. You don't buy an established England international and then leave him on the bench too often. IMO anyway.

Maybe so, but it seems squad filler is becoming quite a derogatory term. In reality there are very few that are guaranteed a starting position; Skrtel, Henderson, Coutinho, Sturridge, maybe Firmino and Clyne.

And I think that shows that we actually have quite a strong squad nowadays rather than just a strong XI like we used to have for so many years.
Coutinhio isn't a guaranteed starter if he plays like he did at the start of last season.

Squad filler. Oh dear. If we play 4-3-3 or a midfield Diamond we'll need at least 6 central midfielders. And we have 4 competitions to play in. I'm pleased we're securing Allen.

If he is going to be guaranteed starter then give him the captains armband. No way can you play both him and Henders every match, there's no point, they are very similar players.

Also, if we're really only going to utilise Henders and Milner then we might as well sell Lucas.

I think Milner will start the majority of matches, but I don't think him starting will be guaranteed.

Well I should rephrase - I don't think anyone is "guaranteed" a starting berth. I think there are some who would be expected to start most games - and one of those would be Milner. But as Lucas referred to Henders as the new captain I think, in that "undercover in the LFC shop" video last week, I guess Henders will be starting most games too. How that all works, God knows. I might be totally wrong. I guess we'll see how it pans out.

Whatever the case may be, isn't it just good to have a number of good players fighting for spots in the team. It is the right problem to have.

It's thought that he'd face work permit issues though, so we might not see him over here for a while!

I'd say average players fighting it out for a starting place in the midfield. Luca, Allen, Can (at this moment), Henderson and Milner. In a midfield of either 2 or 3 I find not one combination either defensively strong enough nor providing enough of a attacking threat. I'm hoping Milner is the sort of player that can control the tempo of a game if played in central midfield. Though in all the times I've seen him play he's not been a central midfielder.

Would sacrifice both Allen and Lucas to bring in a strong no nonsense defensive midfielder or a Alonso type player.

Lucas is a good defensive player, the problem is he doesn't have the distribution skills to then turn the defence into attack.

He would need an Alonso next to him. Milner and Henderson aren't this sort.

Blimey yikes

If you do manage to sign the talented Mr Benteke then i think 5th is nailed on for you guys next season, we just cannot compete with that kind of financial muscle !

Imagine starting the season with a front 2 of Benteke and Ings (very likely with Sturridge's injuries and Mario's scapegoating).

Thankfully we'll see Firmino and Clyne also feature. Milner is the interesting one for me. Will he play centre midfield (something he's not really done regularly since at Villa) or be used as a utility man either as a wing back or one of the front 3 that tracks back? Just can't see him featuring in a front 3 unless other signings fail.

Could you really see him signing for us being played as a wingback - reason he wanted to leave City was to play CM - we offered him that opportunity

If we can play Lazer and Sterling as a wing back last season then I'm certain that Milner is more than capable of being used in that role.

I've not seen anywhere that we promised him central midfield. If we have, my concerns are that he hasn't really played there much in the last 4 years and that if he was to play in a midfield 3 I worry about our defensive cover.

We seem to be ideally set up for a team that plays with 1 striker yet don't really have a striker that is ideal as a lone striker. All fit and on form I can see

Henderson Can Milner
Coutinho Firmino
Sturridge

It'll leave 25 million Lallana on the bench, Origi, Ings and possible 32 million Benteke.

If we play a more classic 433 then it suits our attacking signings better with Can, Lallana, Ings and Origi as squad options.

Milner Henderson
Coutinho
Sturridge Benteke Firmino

I think this last formation is more likely. My issue is that central midfield just isn't strong enough defensively. If Milner plays there I think its either him or Henderson and not both. Be interesting to see who the captain becomes.

Hopefully Liverpool are recouping at least £1m of the £7m spent on the transfer via a loan fee.

Says a lot when Malaga cancel a 2 year loan deal, half way through. Anyway good luck to him, sometimes players find themselves when going to a lower league club and they are allowed to express themselves a bit more.
