I would have to agree with this, and effectively said it a while back. I think we have some better players, but it will take at least a season for them to settle playing properly together/ for us to have time time to see who works and who doesn't. When the main teams challenging for the title have relatively few new players I can't see us doing better than 4th at best this season. Season after could be better once we have worked out who are failures/ the best team to play together/ they have time to get used to each other.

It's why I am a little worried after the preseason - not because they are important games to win in themselves, but I worry the players are not working together properly yet - we looked pretty rusty. That said, apparently Chelsea and Arsenal looked a bit rusty at the weekend too from what I heard?
Not sure if I read it on here or Reddit, but someone said that they expect us to come fifth this season, unless one of the top four cocks up. Have to agree with the sentiment.

Don't think it was here, but unless things work well for us/ one of the other teams has a poor season can't see 4th happening. That said, Man U had a lot of poor games they managed to win, so if go the opposite way this season we could do ok. Arsenal had a very good end of season, but can often be unpredictable in performance. Don't think City have made enough improvements for the title this summer, but still a good side generally. Can see Chelsea/ Arsenal title fight if Arsenal play consistently enough.

What we don't need is loads of posts calling for BR's head in the first few weeks if things take a while to get going.
Have to agree. However it will be difficult with all the away games we have - need to make the most of them otherwise Christmas could look pretty poor points-wise if we have a slow start against easier teams at home.

No idea how we'll go, there's loads of potential, but I'd guess too many new faces again, same problem as last season. I think the squad is a bit unbalanced in favour of attacking players.

No idea what the team should be, I think you should start buy picking the 11 players you'd most like to see on the pitch and then shuffle about a bit to make sure you have a good balance. Problem is I'd most like to see these 11 play:

Sturridge
Benteke
Firmino
Coutinho
Milner
Henderson
Ibe
Cann
Lallana
Lucas
Moreno
Origi

And there's 12 there! Some tough decisions to balance that lot out, I don't really know where to start.

Exactly, too many players that I want to see play and no space for any defenders. I'd quite like Ings to come good too.

Well not long to wait till the new season now.

What are peoples predictions for our first 6 games.

Heart says - Head says

Stoke v Liverpool - Win - Draw

Liverpool v Bournemouth - Win - Win

Arsenal v Liverpool - Loss - Loss

Liverpool v West Ham - Win - Draw

Man Utd v Liverpool - Loss/Draw - Loss

Liverpool v Norwich - Win - Win
Even your head stuff is quite pessimistic... I think we will do better than that, I think Win, Win, loss, Win, loss, win. So a possible 12 from 18, would be okay given the fixtures.

Start with a win or two, however we come by them, I can see this team growing in confidence. Think this is critical rather than being able to predict results just off teams by their reputations, whether we play them home or away etc. With a relatively newly put together team like ours it will be all about form, particularly for the first 10 games. If this team starts to lose it won't matter if it is against Norwich at home or Utd away, we'll collapse like we did at the end of last season.

Without stating the obvious I think we desperately need to set up so that we're hard to beat at the beginning of the season and build from there.

Not sure we have a hard to beat setup - at least not one defensively. We do need Lucas/ Can in midfield to help defensively, but even then it's not a strong defense! Hopefully we get quite a few early goals and so get confidence for outscoring the opposition. Much more fun to watch too! biggrin

My worry is that the side will take time to settle in. Our best starting 11 isn't know, and key positions like CB partnerships are yet to be decided.

its good to have options but i worry BR has too many options, to many choices. Be very easy to get lost> i think he needs to pick his team for stoke and then change just 1-2 players to begin with. let players get form and get into the season

I think everyone accepts there was too much change last season. Not just players but formations, players in multiple formations sometimes being asked to play in unfamiliar roles or to them not natural ways.

Hopefully this season we start by knowing the formation we want to play, the tactics we want to use and play the players best suited to this. If it is a 433 or 4312 then from what I've seen so far there are probably 9 players that should start every game in the same position playing a role that is natural to them.

When fit and available the following are always likely to start in their obvious roles.

Mignolet
Clyne
Skrtel
Sakho or Lovren, we need to settle on one
Henderson
Milner
Coutinho
Firminho
Benteke
Sturridge

All I really see is the choice of a left back and perhaps choosing 2 of Sturridge, Benteke and Firminho if we want to strengthen the midfield with Lucas or Can.

This doesn't have to be complicated. I personally would only have one of Henderson or Milner and get the added defensive midfield strength that way. I'm sure we'll find out soon enough if this central midfield is competitive enough and whether we can score enough goals at the other end.

Well if they have any brains (and I'm sure they do!) I guess the club will have been buying players with a view to who would fit in with the systems and formations they want to use going forward.

Rather than buying players and then thinking "hmmm...how will we play them?".

Let's hope so anyway.

I also think we need a 4132 formation against stronger opposition, a holding midfielder to stengthen the defence (not necessarily midfield). We need a Mascherano enforcer type (Lucas/Can), protecting defence as much as possible, which we all know is likely to be our Achilles heel yet again.

Reading some of these posts recently we're definitely on the 'boom' period on that graph.

hehe

I'd say we need to play 2 defensive midfielders away to top teams. A 4-2-1-2-1 can work really well as can a 3-4-1-1-1.

given our first 6 away games - Stoke, Arse, ManU, Spurs, Chelsea, ManC - I will be happy if we are top 6 come the start of December
