Utd are going through a bigger change than we have done and will take time to settle. De Gea was their man of the season last year so that says a lot about them.. If he leaves, it will be a huge loss.
City are still aging and I think will struggle slightly
Utd are not going through a bigger change than us - they have very few new players to go into the first team, so they have a much more stable team who know each other. That said, they probably should add a few big new players if they want to challenge for the title this season. I do agree De Gea was their most important player last season, so hope they lose him, but it looks like that deal may not happen now.

I see Real Madrid have gone for an even easier preseason friendly than ours tonight, wink

I think we'll do well to get in the top 4 nevermind finish there.

I'd be satisfied with a style of play emerging and some direction towards a team that can compete for top 4. It's his 4th season in charge and if anything my expectations of us under Mr Rodgers tenure for this coming season are the lowest.

Are you saying good football but missing out on top4 is okay with you this season?

Its all well and good saying top 4 minimum or perhaps a trophy BUT the realist in me looks at this team as work in progress. There's just been so many changes in our front 6 and the weaknesses at the back remain exactly the same. Clyne is a welcome improvement but our defensive frailties were not just about Lovren and Moreno. We've lost Gerrard (probably not a bad thing given his contribution last season) BUT he had presence and was a leader. Sterling leaving is a blow also. We have Firminho and Benteke and a talented but raw Ibe. Then players like Lallana and Lazer who we never quite seemed to fit in to a system that brought the best out of them.

I'm sure all sorts of dossiers were produced and powerpoints pointed at but does anyone really think differently? This squad is work in progress with a manager who is also work in progress. I don't think we'll get top 4. Do you?

RT as somewhat of a neutral in this thread, I think your post is a classic example of why people sometimes get frustrated with you you've said a lot and its sensible, but you haven't answered the question.

I agree entirely and actually see your change in view as a welcome acceptance of where we really are as a club.

I know it hurts, 'tis the LFC fan curse frown

Edited to add that I see top4 as a possibility due to ManU just not being strong enough this year, they were incredibly lucky in too many games last season.

My guess is Chelsea Arsenal fighting it out for the PL, Man C covering 3rd and 4th being pretty much open.

I don't think it is acceptable for a manager who will be 4 years into his tenure and will have spent somewhere near 300 million but I think it is inevitable based on where and how we finished last season.

Of course I won't be happy but its where we currently are. We need a platform to build on, I'd welcome the emergence of that platform than the manager playing a system that is short term but prioritises saving his job.

I don't think Mr Rodgers will get us top 4 this season. I'd rather go to the games looking to see success in a different way as I don't think we'll get it this season by a league position finish. I'm sure the PR machine will present something else but I just don't see it.

thumbup

I think as fans (of any club) all we ever want to see is forward momentum and progress.

I'd say fans of Real Madrid and Barcelona expect atleast 1 trophy each season biggrin
Not winning 1 of the league, CL or the Copa del ray trophys must be depressing for their fans hehe

Some reports this morning that Sturridge is nearing training again possibly in the next couple of weeks. That has got to be good news and a slightly earlier than anticipated comeback. Echo says that the trip to United could be a possibility!

If he doesn't get injured by a strong gust. I do kind of feel sorry for him to be honest.

Reports are Moreno is out this wknd and Gomez is in at LB after a fantastic pre season - he does look a natural at the back and super composed on the ball. Could turn out to be our best summer addition

Here is a cracking video to get you in the mood for Neville/Carragher analysis - got to love this sideshow

Brilliant - isn't is great when a young signing gets a crack and makes the most of it with a good outcome. Well done that man

I thought Gomez was a centre back and was only playing left back to get a run out. Pleased for the lad that he's shown such progress and is being rewarded.

So it seems we're playing a back 4.

He s a CB who has played RB - he was tested at LB to see how he would perform and he has nearly been for me MOM in each game - took to it like a duck out of water wink
Please for the lad, its obvious he has got his head down....i expected him to go on loan when he signed...

When you say a back 4, I know Clyne is very attacking and I assume that Gomez is as well?

What I seen of Gomez was that he was more solid at defending. Moreno is more of an attacking LB.

Good news is that we might be offloading Borini. Hopefully we get some £ for him.

There's a handful writing off Utd here, I wouldn't to be honest. Nailed on top 4 for them as with City, Chelsea and Arsenal like I said.

I still can't believe that people think we would be the ones waiting to capitalise on another teams failure, have you seen the way we can fk it up season after season!
We will have another frustrating season of strange line ups, tactics and players out of position.

5th if we have a bloody good season IMO.

If anyone hadn't noticed, I am not optimistic.
