Balotelli having medical at AC Milan ahead of a loan move. No loan fee and Liverpool paying part of his wages.

Milan are laughing.
Why? Have they seen him play? Just hope they don't look at how many shots he had last season and how many were on target!

Yeah, we cocked up, but we'll be getting the best of any deal that sees him leave.

We've traded attacking threat for defensive organisation. I'm sure once we've got going a bit, in the "easier" games we'll play a bit more attacking, maybe even two up front, but at the moment you can't have it both ways.

Apparently, Mignolet now has the most number of clean sheets in the Premiership in 2015.
You are right, of course there is a fine line between defence and attack. And we need to get our house in order before going to war.

However, I said during last night's game we are missing one quality player. Whilst Sturridge is mentioned, I think what we are really missing is that General, a power player, someone directing proceedings. We have a few mini-captains on the pitch (Henderson, Milner, Skrtel) but we lack that one power player. Neville talks about it in the context of Arsenal in this great piece below; I think the same applies to us.

I cannot believe someone hasn't been sacked for this.

I agree, we've not quite got that spine yet. I think we're good enough to get top four, but (sadly) I don't think we're going to have a tilt at the title with Henderson as captain, though I hope he proves me wrong. Maybe Can will turn into our midfield general, and Lovren will step up and be the rock in defence...

The transfer committee overruled BR's choices and left him with 1 choice of new star stiker to go for - Eto'o (!!) or Balotelli. Clearly a sign that the transfer committee way of working was deeply flawed. Utterly inept and clearly relied on stats/trends/whatever far more than actually "is this a good idea or not" common sense.

That TC way of working has now been ditched, we are told. So presumably someone was either sacked or duties reassigned/they were disciplined - we are unlikely to know. A company doesn't have a big reorganisation like that over such an important part of the business, without someone taking the blame.

Balotelli seems to have quickly showed he wasn't prepared to do what was required to get in the team and stay there. So BR wants rid, so he can spend more time on the positive group of players who DO want to move forward together. We're left with a player now unattractive to most possible bidders, and want as much of his salary off the books as poss. Indications are that Milan will pay half his salary, we pay half. Paying 40k a week for a failed gamble is better than paying 80k a week, assuming no-one wants to buy/he doesn't want to move for less than he's on now.

More than happy with that. 3 games, 2 wins and a draw.
Our first 7 away games are the worst start you could imagine so to have 4 points from the first 2 is fantastic!
That said, the first game away was the "easy" one in that Stoke are a good team and we have the scars from last season, but in *theory* we should be beating them (at least compared to the 2nd to 7th away games). But yes, a good start. Interesting to see how this "defensive" team works - not 100% sure we have the players to properly pull it off, but done well so far with a bit of luck from the referees!

Thing is it's probably best not to risk this season on a big gamble of trying to get that person/ playing them. We have a lot of new players and need to bed them in together. After last season the team needs time to settle and find out who are the ones that work and who needs replaced. At the end of this season we will have a better idea, and hopefully a stronger squad that means we can see the positions that need most strengthening and spend bigger on a few quality players now we have a bigger squad. Changing too much will just create bigger problems.

Reports from Di Marzio (same guy who leaked the story about Balo back to Milan a few days ago), is that Milan have hired a babysitter 24 hour bodyguard for Balotelli..

Yeah Balotelli has in the lowest cost easiest way for being a lazy, no-try, waste of a team spot annoyance.

I was always led to believe that Mr Rodgers has final say though I agree it's difficult for him really to have a say if the shortlist is someone else's. I don't recall who his choices were that summer, perhaps you do?

I hadn't realised that the transfer committee of working had been ditched. Though I agree with you that someone has clearly been held accountable, even if we don't know who.

I'm over Mario, wish the lad well and move on. We've wasted more money in the past and no doubt will do again in the future.

I was genuinely emotional when Lucas took his shin pads off and clapped the fans before leaving the field. It didn't surprise me that Arsenal looked more dangerous when he was subbed.

Practically flushed £16m down the toilet. How can clubs waste money like this? I just cannot believe what effectively amounts to financial mismanagement.

Next year he will be back 2 years into a 3 year contract and can start talking to other clubs. No doubt he will go out on loan again until his contract runs down, when he will leave on a free. All I can picture is that big Mario smile. To paraphrase a famous quote, the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he was a footballer.

According to Rodgers, he is "the best defensive midfielder we have" and is going nowhere:

From what I understand the TC hasn't been scrapped entirely, but it's been severely shaken up, with BR taking a much more prominent role and his input carries much more weight. That's what I've read, to be honest I don't really care how it works, as long as we have more windows like this summer and less like last summer!

I think when we bought Balo, we'd dilly-dallied regarding Bony and then lost out to City, considered Benteke, but thought he was too expensive, and left with Eto'o and Balo. What a choice!

As for Lucas in the Arsenal game, he was clearly tiring and Arsenal had been looking more dangerous for a good 5-10 minutes before he came off. However I do hope that he stays and completely agree that he's invaluable in certain games.

It's part and parcel of the business. You could avoid it by signing players on a one year basis, but then you would lose out on deals like we got for Torres/ Suarez, not to mention losing most players who have a good season because a bigger club comes in for them.

High risk, high reward.

Bit like the oil industry - people complain when they make billions of pounds of profit (and that they should pay more in tax/ it's immoral etc). Yet they don't say anything when the companies are making big loses now (no tax discount etc). If you want a safer risk picture go for something like supermarkets instead.

We also tried to sign Sanchez and Remy. So Balo was probably 4th choice at best.

I don't but I remember being underwhelmed - they weren't much better than what we ended up with...

In the same way that, in his prime, John Glenson was great going forward, but slightly suspect defending, I think Clyne is the opposite - fantastic in defence, a real rock, but so far hasn't offered a massive amount going forward. I think this maybe down to BR obviously asking one of the wingbacks to stay back at all times, so hopefully we'll see that side to him improve over the season. I also think his positioning could do with a tiny, tiny bit of improvement. But all in all I think he's so far been one of our best transfers from this summer.

I also think this could be a big season for Emre.
