Well apparently we are "worth nearly $1 billion".

So could we have signed Depay? I would bet you £20k a week extra on whatever United are paying him, he would have signed.

I simply do not get the wage salary cap. If Liverpool are happy to flush £120m down the pisser purely on transfer, surely they could save with a more prudent transfer spend policy and afford to pay £20k+ on top of whatever the top clubs are paying to land the TOP player(s) we need!
Listen Depay to us was never going to happen if UTD were in for him - no point stressing about that

Problem is putting all our eggs into 1 basket like last year with Sanchez, I just hope they have not done this here- at least UTD have signed him before the window is even open so we should have other options.

So say we didn't sign all those players last summer and instead spent £120m on 2 players.

I'm assuming one striker and the other would either be a midfielder or CB. Assume neither get injured and both have great first seasons (unlikely, in fact almost unheard of). Our striker would have burned out by March. We would have also had a personnel crisis in central defence, we would have lacked options on the wings (both in defence and midfield), nor would we have had any plan B.

In essence you want us to do what Chelsea did. Unfortunately Fabregas has gone off the boil lately and Costa has been injured a lot this year. Luckily they've got a world class spine to fall back on. We don't.

You're in a good mood today, Jammy.

Agreed but I really don't think we will have, this early. Anyone at the club must have realised if Utd showed an interest, he'd be going there. Maybe they only changed their mind about him when we were going for him, who knows. Maybe Depay and VG were in touch and VG persuaded Utd to stump up the cash for him...

Lets hope not - although after summer last year and our striker problems - fk knows

BR has gone on record as saying they draw up 3 targets, 1st 2nd and 3 choice

You cant surely tell me Sanchez was 1st and Mario and Eto were 2nd and 3rd?? if so, pass me the bottle

The one thing I want to know is why on earth we didn't sign Remy?

He was ours and we pulled the plug. No good saying that he didn't pass a medical, we bought Carroll and he was crocked at the time (didn't get much better once he "recovered" tbf).

mentioned this 100x - rumours were he failed the medical for class A

In other news - Toure is off end of the summer - wonder if they will pull back Llori ?

You would be wrong, there is one simple reason we have Depay and he's a slightly mad dutchman.

They have an almost father and son relationship (he has Memphis on his shirt as he doesnt want to acknowledge his fathers name) and by all accounts was heading down the Ravel Morrison route of throwing it all away until LvG chose him for the national team and took him under his wing. He credits LvG for his personal and professional growth.

This one for once was not all about money

The game when you beat us 3-0 at OT was a real low point for me. Mainly because you were ste and there for the taking.

Bearing in mind I am a scouser who has lived in Manchester for the whole of the Fergie era, that means I have had A LOT of lows!

I was genuinely nervous before that game, couldn't believe quite how you capitulated.

Oooof yeah thats gotta be tough!

Unfortunately it's just the reality of the FFP era when you have City, Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal in the league.

I don't even think stadium expenansion does much any more...what are gate reciepts as a % of tunrover nowadays? Must be tiny compared to what they were when Arsenal justified moving stadium.

Depressing isn't it?

Will just try to be happy with coming 5th and 6th with the occasional excursion higher up the league.
I really don't think there is a magic formula to consistently outperform salary spend.
Indeed. The only glimmer of hope is that Chelsea haven't really got much in terms of commercial support and that maybe, just maybe, we'll be able to compete more with Arsenal after a few years of having our stadium expansion complete.

Until then it would just be nice if we could get a team together that had half the attacking flair that we had with Suarez and actually showed a bit of fight every now and then.
Chelsea generate more from their commercial arm than you guys do.

I wouldn't be surprised if matchday revenue is around 20-25% of total turnover nowadays.

Ah, so it's you who's in the little pocket of Liverpool fans in town when we play each other. wink

I always think they're a brave bunch. A lot of drunken knobs around.

Rumours? That yank ex FSG guy was talking about it several weeks ago on Twitter. He has a whole load of LFC followers clearly, from some of his comments. The story was out there - but the story wasn't that he was coming; just that we were after him. Just as we're after several other players.

Trouble is, 1 person on a web forum says "rumours are that..." and all of a sudden, people read it as a fact, when it isn't, necessarily. I'm not suggesting you have made it up btw - but some people who say "rumours are that..." have just made something up because they believe it's probably the case.

Posted this in the Utd thread but thought you chaps might be interested.

“Up until about 48 hours ago he wasn’t going to go there [Manchester United],” Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan told Hawksbee and Jacobs. “There was a bigger chance he would go to PSG or Liverpool.

“We understand Liverpool were real serious contenders, because United weren’t involved. He had a strong favour for the Premier League and he was flattered by the interest from Liverpool. Bolo Zenden and Dirk Kuyt told him he would get playing time there and it would be a great set-up for him to develop.

“But what happened in the last 48 hours was Man United became aware of the fact PSG were prepared to go a long, long way financially [to sign him]. The money PSG are offering to players is, I understand, flabbergasting.

“But Man United attracts players much more than PSG, even though they’ve had a difficult one and a half years. PSG can lure them only with money.

“Depay had not heard that much from United. They wanted to be kept in the loop, but that was it, but then came the moment when he could be signing for someone else and then ‘bang’, there was a real forceful hand at Old Trafford and from that moment on they wanted to do it. And they did it.

“It just shows the determination they have to get things right for next season.”

Another reported who writes a sensationalist overblown load of cack, to me. Sorry. No different from most other journalists - doesn't tell me he's close to LFC at all to be honest. I might be wrong.

Which goes to show that Utd really must have a different set up for transfers than we have - that article linked to in the last vol of this thread showing our transfer process. Its not designed to act quickly (which hopefully would avoid another "Andy Carroll").
