I don't understand this obsession with comparing it to the men's game.
Give them both equal funding and equal wages / training facilities, along with equal opportunities to participate (don't forget this enlightened country only permitted it from the 70's!) then make the comparison.
Pretty natural when everyone (probably) on this thread are men, and we are used to watching the men's game.Give them both equal funding and equal wages / training facilities, along with equal opportunities to participate (don't forget this enlightened country only permitted it from the 70's!) then make the comparison.
Some of the really good guys I play with (they play competitive Saturday amateur football and occasionally play in our weekly kick around which is a lower standard) would give them a good game and probably win. They don't train other than keeping generally fit and have zero funding other than £1,000 sponsorship per season.
That said I have enjoyed 1 or 2 of the WWC games, but strangely not as much as watching Sunday league at the local park (much worse standard) - not sure why, hopefully not just subconscious sexism
The second goal was very good.
I think the thing people are forgetting is that a lot of the players ARE still amateurs. Most of the Colombian side who went out against a very poor US outfit last night are amateurs or semi professional, so I don't think you can judge them by the same standard. But even then, the Colombians showed a lot of good technical skill. Even the Norway team England played against has semi-professionals within it.
If they were all professionals with the same level of training, funding and opportunities as the male game then yes it would be a valid comparison.
When will be worth watching will be Germany vs France. That is going to be a humdinger.

Same for me, my son used to play at a reasonable level in the Isthmian League (Rymans) and I used to enjoy watching those games. I think it's because the men's game is certainly faster, I can't believe the time the women seem to have on the ball, and the men's game is more combative i.e. they get stuck in! Certainly true at the level my lad played. And that aggression made it quite fun to watch. That performance last night showed real grit. I thought there was no way back at a goal down and could only see a 2 or 3 nil loss. To come back and win it, fantastic.
Trying to recall the last time the men came from behind in a world cup knockout round to win in normal time. We came from behind against Camaroon in 1990 but won it in extra time.
I just can't think of when the men have done that? Anyone?

Good point that. I think the way we play is similar Men and Women, in that the same criticisms could be leveled at both teams:Trying to recall the last time the men came from behind in a world cup knockout round to win in normal time. Too cautious going forward, don't score enough goals in important matches and lack composure in the final 3rd.
Having said that, similar strengths:
Majority of players technically good on the ball, brave, decent fitness levels and work ethic.
Carney is head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch IMO.

To answer my own question, never.I just can't think of when the men have done that? Anyone?
In fact, England have only ever come from behind twice to win a knockout match at the world cup, Cameroon in 1990 and Germany in the final of 66, and both times we needed extra time!
The third goal against W Germany was never over the line, but at least it was a close decision.
Unlike the Lampard "goal" in 2010 that was almost in the back of the net. If that had been allowed, we would have had the joy of being level at half time, before being crushed to a pulp in the 2nd half.
