Thr real test this season won't be against the Barcelona's - it will be against the likes of the Tranmere's and Wigan's; teams that put 10 men behind the ball and that we struggle to break down.

13 mins of highlights are up:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLiGT06KP2s

Barcelona looked pretty poor to be fair but some of our players looked excellent. Mane and Origi look like they will be a threat this season and Markovic's lobbed pass and Grujic's header were sublime - more likely to see those in a non competitive match I suppose but still nice to see.

Looked like we didn't miss Sturridge at all - which is a big plus over a year ago already.

Agree. Also a few people under the radar - got to say Klavan looked very reassured at the back - kept things simple and made the right decisions. Dare I say it, Hyypia-esqe! He looks like a very good buy! Also I thought Kevin Stewart was pretty good, created the chance for Origi with a good interception and also set up Firmino who should have scored!

Not sure if Moreno is trying to follow Chuck "Allen" Norris this season but his Samson style hair growth has not improved his game in the same way as it did Allen's! smile

Agreed. And how many of our players will still perform on a cold and wet Tuesday in Grimsby (or wherever). Interesting times. smile

I did think when we signed Klavan "he must be decent" given his international record and age. Nice to see some solidity at the back. Another Hyppia would be a god send!

Looks a very astute signing - no megabucks star flashiness, just gets on the with the job

It was the pressing game that impressed the most for me yesterday. Firmino, Lallana and Henderson really suit this. As does Origi. Was Sturridge already err injured?

I'd be happy to start the season with this.

Mignolet
Clyne Lovren Klavan Milner
Can Henderson
Mane Firmino Coutinho
Origi

I can easily see Lallana, Grujic and Wijnaldum fighting it out for the 3 attacking midfield positions whilst Origi, Sturridge and Ings compete for the striker role.

Think Lazer, Benteke and Mario will be gone. Still worry about that central midfield without Can there. In any other combination I worry we'll get over run. And of course there's the absence of full back cover.

My honest thoughts are that with the players we have the team is better suited to a 343 formation.

Lovren Matip Sakho
Clyne Can Henderson Milner
Mane Sturridge Coutinho

With Wijnaldum, Grujic, Firmino, Lallana, Origi and Ings fighting out for starting positions.

Huge respect for John Barnes as a man and he was a brilliant player, too.

Ruled out before the game with a "slight hip injury". Speculation as to whether that also rules him out of the Arsenal game next week.

Seems like Klopp didn't talk to the rag because of the Lovren story about his wife having an affair.
I've read that Lazar will probably stay.

Mane impressed me a lot yesterday. Looked sharp.

I don't mind Lazer staying. Look what Klopp has already done to players like Firmino, Lovren and Lallana. If he gets anywhere near the level we hoped he'd be then he can be an understudy to Mane.

As for Sturridge, I'm pleased that he isn't central to the style of football we now play, One striker up front in a 4231 also has Origi and Ings. When we play a 433 without a striker we have plenty to pick from a fluid front 3 with Lallana, Ings, Firmino, Coutinho, Mane, Wijnaldum and even Lazer.

Hopefully Henderson can put the nightmare of last season behind him and form a strong central midfield partnership with Can. Add Milner at left back and once the new keeper is fit again, this really is a completely transformed team from what Mr Rodgers created and left behind. Its been a long time since I've been so positive at the beginning of a season.

Without trying to take too much gloss off of the victory it looked as if Barca were out on the town Friday night. Having said that confidence breeds confidence.
