Funny old game.

Doesn't read as if Sturridge is happy being played anywhere other than centre forward.

He is our best striker and if he is fit and on the pitch it really makes no sense to have him play on the left.

Sakho maybe on loan even before Matip has played a game, refusing to buy a left back and instead trying to transform Milner into one, ignoring the weakness at centre midfield and all of this with the window coming to an end where we've spent less money on buying players than we made on selling them. All seems a strange serious of decisions and if I didn't know any better it looks like we're tightening our belts.

Asking your only 20 goal a season player to play on the left and he publicaly is now critical of it. I always thought football was a simple game and think SAF won what he did because he treated it that way.

Can't disagree with any of that really.

From being really happy with our transfer business at the start of the window, I'm now much less so and somewhat baffled too.

Article with his quotes here: http://www.thisisanfield.com/2016/08/im-centre-for...

While I tend to agree - he should be ahead of Firmino playing up front in the middle - publically criticising Klopp won't do him any favours. And quite frankly I get pissed off when players earning what he earns start grumbling because he wants to play in a different position. Put up and shut the eff up.

One of the commenters on that TIA article came up with an interesting theory:

"Klopp did nearly the same thing with Lewandowski in his first year in Dortmund. He played him as a number 10, and Lewa has later stated that he was angry at Klopp because he didn't understand why he was being played out of position. And he felt he couldn't well as a number 10. But after that year, Klopp moved him up to striker position, and Lewa said he then understood why. Cause by moving him out of position, he had to learn other stuff as well, like get better at passing, link-up play and everything that comes with being a number 10. Which then ultimately made him to a complete forward, instead of just a poacher which he was before. Might be the reason why Klopp wants Sturridge to play there. Cause even though Sturridge is a great poacher, he could get better in other areas. And being on the wing forces him to have a higher workrate as well, which is probably his worst trait along with aerial ability. Yeah he's scored some goals with his head, but rarely goes up for a challenge, perhaps in fear of getting injured. Playing on the wing won't help with that, but it will help with link-up play, hopefully better vision, and even better positioning seing as he likes to wander both deep to collect and out on the righthand side to cut inside and shoot. Or it could be Klopp testing his mentality, or both."

I think grumbling is good, if and only if it is done behind closed doors of Melwood. A good honest conversation with someone who is prepared to listen and act can be healthy (not only Sturridge but Milner has also voiced his opinion in recent weeks about his dislike of playing LB). A happy team plays well.

Putting square pegs really is a consequence of not having enough good players in the required positions. Players have to be open and accepting to be played out of position and have that desire to learn. Others will never be able to do it because they like to stick to what they know and not be put outside their comfort zone. A great manager in my opinion is able to determine very early on who are the ones that can do it and the ones that simply won't.

We crave consistency but experimenting like this I believe we will continue to be inconsistent.

Completely agree and if he had been fit against Burnley I reckon things would have gone differently.
I think Mane maybe the real weapon against sides that sit back, his pace is electric and allows him to simply beat a man, create that space that others can then exploit.

Hopefully he can carry on this form.

The reality is its going to take a good few transfer windows to sort out the poor purchases of years gone by. I would hope now Klopp can be selective so in future windows and spend big in the positions he needs, although i do wonder if he does prefer to buy a 19-23 year old with potential and willingness that a 26-29 year old who is the finished article but comes might not toe the line.

I bet Bayern were really grateful to Klopp for that! hehe

Would make sense though, if Sturridge is to be with us and Klopp long term then he really does have to up his work rate. I imagine it'll work the other way for Firmino, who has great work rate, but isn't the best finisher. Besides, I don't remember him complaining much when he wasn't played either side of Suarez on our march towards (nearly) the title!!

True - although there's something about Sturridge. He goes on a bit about his religion and thanking God which is fine, no issues with that. But then he comes across as a sulky selfish tt most of the time - rarely seems to look like he's enjoying himself. He always gives off the impression (rightly or wrongly) that he wants it all to be about him and he would be much happier if the team played around HIM.

I feel like Klopp has been a bit of a Wenger this last month or so. Too much faith in his own ability rather than just going out and signing the players you obviously need. I'm an outsider looking in so I don't pay too much attention to Liverpool, but surely a GK, LB, CB and CM were right at the top of the pile for priorities. Instead I see you signing Mane? I don't get it. I mean he's decent, but you already have Coutinho, Lalana, Firminho for that. In the last 5-6 years Liverpool's defence has been atrocious, why are managers ignoring this in favour of all out attack?! I'd be fuming seeing a player like Williams go to your close rivals for a very reasonable price.

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, but is anyone else seeing shades of Wenger with the reluctance to solve the fking obvious problems which in my opinion would make Liverpool title contenders?

He signed 2 CBS and 1 GK ??

We are short in most Liverpool fans eyes of a DM and a LB

We were also desperate for a player like Mane as he is so different to the 3 you mentioned who are all very similar..we were crying out for a playing with pace and power who would give defences something else to worry about behind rather than just playing in front of them

We've signed Karius, one of the best goalkeepers in the BL last season, Matip, one of the best CBs in the BL last season, and Wijnaldum as CM.

We also brought Klopp in as someone who can cultivate players and turn no names into superstars, something we celebrated at the time. In seems however that most of you guys actually wanted Mourinho, someone who shuns youth and only wants to buy ready-made Worldies.

1 thing I noted in the Burton match commentary - when Karius was signed, I saw articles referring to him as voted "2nd best in the Bundesliga" behind you know who. In the Burton commentary, I'm sure they referred to him as voted "4th best in the Bundesliga".

Of course. He's always number 1, regardless of what the award is for, or where it is.
