RS5 vs remapped 435d X-Drive
Discussion
Browsing through the classifieds filtering by price, mileage, performance, driven wheels, gearbox and body type and the RS5 and 435D X-drive both seemed to feature largely in the results.
Two very different cars obviously but made me think, what would be quicker between an RS5 and a remapped 435d. The RS5 peak power is a good bit higher at 440bhp vs estimated 370 for the BM, but of torque figures of estimated 730Nm vs 430 in favour of the BM (which is also 100kg lighter), would a 435d with just a remap be a match for the RS5 in the real world?

In the real world don't forget the Diesel has to run much longer gearing, so you can take ~1/3rd of that torque off straight away by the time it gets to the rear wheels. Think of it like setting off on a push bike in top gear.
Also, given that both will probably be autos, (does anyone buy manual RS5s?), they will both kick down anyway, so low down torque isn't really going to help.
A better comparison would be against another turbo petrol, like an M4. That would still be way quicker unless it's snowing. Quite tunable too

From a rough power/weight, calculation you'd need an additional 33bhp on the BMW to match the A5, but BHP/tonne doesn't take in to account shape of the power band or the gearing.
I'm guessing by faster in the real world you just mean accelerating in a straight line, which is all you can really do on the roads.

Indeed. Peoples real worlds vary enormously.
Off the line pedal to the metal, the RS5 will blast off into the distance. Power is always more useful than torque in those scenarios.
Trundling along doing 60 on a busy DC, a squirt of the gas when a gap presents itself, that's where Diesel has an advantage as the RS5 will out of it's peak torque zone.

The RS5's engine is all about the top end; the opposite to the 435d's diesel. If you're going to be flooring it in a high gear / low RPM, the diesel stands a chance but once you're in the mood / the road opens-up, I'd expect the RS5 to hit it's stride.
Having said that, I had a facelift 330d (RWD) as a courtesy car for a week last year and it was a very impressive machine.

If you get a RS5 you better hope you don't come up against a remapped Leon Cupra.....

I'd be surprised if an RS5 was able to pull away at all from a standing start, let alone blast off into the distance, unfortunately. The test data I can find has the 435d and RS5 pretty much neck and neck from 0-60.Off the line pedal to the metal, the RS5 will blast off into the distance. Either of these cars is WAY too fast to fully extend on the public road, so it really just comes down to "pub ammo" imo......
I know what you are saying but the Audi does 0-100 mph in about 10 sec, there are quite a few much quicker cars, that people then tune, the GTR for example, 0100 mph in 6.8 sec with what 550/600 bhp, then they get tuned further, it has a got a bit daft !Ferrari 488 0-124 mph in 8.3 sec.
My old Merc does 100 in 11.7 and is only just, after 10 months, started to feel normal, not sure how anyone copes with a tuned GTR, do they end up like the bloke from Friday Night Dinner with the Alsation, permanently terrified of it ?
