Just a word of warning, I recently had 2 new tyres on my van at a 'tyre specialist' in Guildford who I won't name here ( pm me if you want to know). The very helpful guy in the garage told me to order online when I make the appointment and it would be cheaper.
Just had first mot done on van and had to change them again as they are an mot failure ( not commercial). The company have admitted that although they knew they were the wrong ones they fitted them anyway as I ordered them online and it was my responsibility to order the correct ones!
Tell that to the judge when I have a blowout on the motorway🚑

So they admit to fitting the wrong tyres that do not conform to the Construction & Use Regs
Is that not the whole idea of going to a competent shop with trained fitters / techs
I would be looking for some £££ back
Maybe a word in the managers earhole and mention trading standards.

Not at all satisfactory OP.

I realise it's too late now, but I always use Martins Tyres in Bisley (as have others on here) and have never found anyone to beat them on price - or speed of fitting!

The facilities are pretty basic, but you are never there for long!

Totally agree, I have got the ceo's email from a website, just waiting to calm down before I mail them!

I'm not following. Apologies if this comes across badly, it is not intended to. You ordered tyres and asked them to fit them? What was wrong with the tyres that made them an MOT fail? You were driving around on them for a while before the MOT and didn't notice?

I always order online and check the tyres myself before they are fitted, mostly because I have trust issues with the human race generally...

I ordered the tyres via the companies own website and made an appointment for them to be fitted. The website asked for size, radius, speed etc so I ordered the same as was on the original but it didn't ask for type of vehicle. I didn't realise that there was a difference between normal tyres and commercial. They failed not as they were not commercial, ie wrong tyres for vehicle

Ah, I see. That would have caught me out as well as I wouldn't know there was a difference between commercial and non-commercial. Given that it's their own website, sounds like you have a good case.

Good luck!

I think this is where putting your reg number into the web search pays off. Out of interest what tyres did you get and what van is it?

Could have been the load rating or ply of tyre.
Have not seen a tyre with "Commercial" stamped on it.
But to be fair have where ever possible use Martins Tyre however for my HGV Tyre work
and supply I use Staysure Tyre in Arborfield and these guys have done out of hours call out
and been very helpful.

You've only replaced the tyres with exactly what was on so I can't see the problem?

I think it's a ply rating but I could be wrong, I'm going down the road that if I had a blowout and they knowingly fitting the wrong tyre they would be responsible regardless of the t's and c's on their website. Just to be clear I'm not after compensation but an apology would be nice. A bit worried if companies are fitting tyres knowing they are incorrect. Thanks for the recommendations I'll take that on board when I need more.

Is this really a C&U issue? Surely the law just requires the tyre to have the right speed and load capacity? Is Commercial defined or just another vague made-up term like taxi tyre?

I'm not a tyre specialist but the main dealer was going to fail the MOT as they are not commercial tyres even though they have approx 7mm of tread

Your van must be a class 7 then, in which case the tyres need to have an adequate load rating for the axle weights

Commercial tyres will have a C on the sidewall, such as 205/65r16 C.

I never had an issue with MOTs have XL rated tyres on my Fiat Scudo, I did change to commercial tyrs in the end as they lasted longer.

Website didn't allow for a c to be inserted or reg/type of vehicle. I assumed the company would advise if they were wrong tyres, they're the experts after all!

I see.
Well it's cut and dried. They need to reimburse you for any costs etc it's 100% their negligence.
