Are you classing the Europa League as a brand new competition and not the old UEFA Cup?

No, I'm classing it as the UEFA.

To the best of my knowledge, I don't think any British club has won all the domestic competitions, plus the European Cup, Cup Winners Cup, UEFA. Cup and the World club cup / championship.

I'm happy yo be proven wrong, but I think we may make history if we win the Europa this season.

Chelsea? PL winners really limits the options.

Could be a pre PL era side? Not sure there was a World Club competition back then.

It's not Chelsea, as Corinthians beat them1-0 in the world club cup final.

It's a bit tenuous if we're counting the one off "championships" like the Charity Shield and World Club match. Isn't there another one where the Europa And ECL winners play each other? Does that count too?

Have we won the "We Drew with West Brom" cup, or the PL in October hehe

We won the super cup, too!

But, seriously, the world club cup / championship is a multi team tournament, with representatives from all federations. It's not a Mickey Mouse competition. We are still the only British club to win it.

So, I say go for the Europa to complete the full collection!

Hey, I'm not complaining as long as we win some silverware. I won't be over excited, but will see it as a positive step for this team in transition.

Question:

Winning the Europa League/Cup gives an automatic entry to the CL the following year yes?

Does this come at the expense of whoever finishes 4th? Or in addition to that team?

I'm sure it's in place of the team that finished 4th. I'm sure it happened a few years back when Spurs finished 4th but Chelsea won the EL.

In place of, even if the team in 4th wins the ECL.

Nope, it's in addition to the nations regular CL participants and favourable drawing scheme, Spain had 5 CL participants this season for instance, 4+1. The 1 being Sevilla, the EL winners of 2015/2016.

It's all part of the UEFA stuntastic way of killing European football, brought to you since 2001.

Just give it away to the few top clubs of the three top leaques, the more leverage the better, the more predictable, the better. It's all part of a handy system of shifting money (TV rights, sponsorship/kit deals) to the largest clubs.

And if they don't get their way; hey we'll just threaten to start our own leaque.....

I'm sure that's wrong - we can have a max. of 5 in the Champions League, should an EPL team win the Europa.

ECL winner will always get a place, along with the top 4, due to our coefficient.

I think the only way 4th in the league won't get to the Champions League next season is if Leicester manage to win it AND an English teams wins the Europa. If this happens, it'll be top 3 + Leicester + Europa winners.

I was in a hotel bar earlier. In Bracknell...

Anyway, bloke on the next table was having dinner in the 'Bierkeller' with his other half.

He started the night on Erdinger (they have it on keg, which is nice) - and got really animated when Arsenal got that very dodgy looking penalty (if that was us, there's no way it would have been given)... he ended up the night looking depressed and drinking San Miguel.

He also wore a baseball cap in Lewis Hamilton style, despite being whiter than the bed sheets...

Have to say, despite our challenges in recent years, this made my evening!

Arsene is the Jeremy Corbyn of PL football.
He's so awful that it would be funny if it wasn't depressing. Allowing your team to get humiliated away in Europe time after time is just shambolic.

He should take a leaf out of SAF's book and retire before it all falls apart....

...and then go and visit Moyes to tell him he is his successor.

Agreed. Under investment in the team and a general arrogance that champions league football is a given year after year. At least till the knock out stages. Money before glory.
A year or two out of the "champions" league (joke title) won't do Arsenal any harm, 'cept financially.

I agree with this paragraph from that article:
NY Times said:
What made the Champions League’s predecessor, the European Cup, so special, what imbued it with a sense of occasion in the days when only a league’s champion qualified, was the rarity value of seeing the Continent’s greatest teams in direct competition.
It'll never happen, but it would be great to see the Champions League go back to just the top 1 or 2 from each league and everyone else goes into the Europa League.
